rEX Posted March 28, 2008 Report Share Posted March 28, 2008 I am brand new to this site. WOW! Looks like a lot of knowledge here. I am just getting into making my own pastics...out of necessity. I was using an 8" shad body for catching striped bass in the Chesapeake Bay. Well it seems the shad bodies cannot be bought anymore. I got 2 custom molds made locally with the exact size I needed. I have been experimenting with different colorings with some success. I am now tring to figure out the best way to paint the backs of the bodies black as well as some designs on the sides. boomah21 Posted March 28, 2008 Report Share Posted March 28, 2008 I dont know a lot about soft plastics however would imagine you could paint your soft plastics with an airbrush and then dip the bait in clear plastics? Not sure if that will help or not....However I can tell you I know there are guys on this site with the answer and its not a matter of "secrets" just be patient. bdomina Posted March 28, 2008 Report Share Posted March 28, 2008 do a little digging not just on this site. search the net for different things (ink / printing on soft plastics / plastisol). I mean soft plastics are printed on everyday. like can coolies and things of the like. the answers are out there, maybe you will find something and turn everyone else on to it. james bradshaw Posted March 29, 2008 Report Share Posted March 29, 2008 You can buy the paint from Lure Craft and a cheap air brush and paint all your baits, just use a little trial and error to find what works the best for you. You can spray, dip or brush that paint on. you don't need to seal the paint on with more plastic. The paint will stick to the plastic without peeling off. Good luck! I ordered some paint from LC and will experiment with different application techniques. So far I have tried some vinyl paint that I use on my bucktsails. That doesn't work. I have tried some permanent markers. They don't work. Maybe the LC paint will do what I need. One thing I have figured out though is I don't like using the pouring pot I bought from LC. These large shad bodies take around 3 ounces of plastic each. The pouring pot only holds 24 ounces and doesn't work well when it gets low. It takes too long to reheat more plasic after pouring only a few baits. I tried the microwave thing yesterday and that was much quicker. I wil give someone a deal on the melting pot if thay ere interested. I have only used it 3 times. Thanks again to those who posted and I will try to be a little more patient in the future.
