King Bait Co.
I am going to be fishing next week in a turny. So I need a little help because the weather here in Nebraska is so scewed up right now 30's one week 60's the next and wind and wind and wind. I am ging to guess the water temp is about mid fortys to low fiftys. Waster is going to be stired up pretty good so viz is about 2' to 1/2'. anybody have any ideas what to throw other than weighted Red M-80's. Not much is hitting anywere right now. I guess global warming is affecting Nebraska right now or maybe its to the south of us. Thanks for any help!
6_feet_deep
....the weather here in Nebraska is so scewed up right now 30's one week 60's the next and wind and wind and wind.... I live toward central NC and fish the yadkin river chain a bit (High Rock, Badin) and the weather here is doing the same thing. Last week it was hitting upper 70's and then Monday comes around this week and it's 50 with lows in the lower 40s. The sorry a$# weather men say it's going to be almost 80 this weekend, but who knows. Anyway, down here the boys have been catching them on spinnerbait with alot of color, jigs (caught a few 4lb's this weekend for me and a buddy), plastic worms, & some cranking too. Biting on points and in pockets over grass. The water's been about 2ft vis and then it'll rain alot and it'll drop to about 6" vis. Some of the fish seem to be spawning in stages as usual so we've been catching them in a foot of water and also in about 6 to 8 feet of water...I guess they're waiting on beds to open up. I know I'm a bit away from you, but hope this helps. Good luck!
papajoe
First check for some stable weather prior to the tourney. If it stays the same for a few days prior to the event, you can start out looking for active fish with a colorado bladed spinner bait or a lipless crank fished off the first breakline up from where they winter toward where you think they'll be spawning. If the water temp. is higher that what you anticipate, move up in the water column above the break. A jerk- bait is hard to beat in this situation as is either of the above mentioned. If the weather is unstable, you have your work cut out for you. I'd start with a jigging spoon fished at the bottom of the same break mentioned. A jig w/pork in the same area is another alternative. If you've ever c-rigged a floating minnow bait, now would be a great time to try it as you can cover that deep water quickly and find concentrations of fish with it. Hope that helps. turkeylegs1246
Cold weather bassin= jig and pig in the thickest cover available. The thick cover will hold more heat than open water. Bass, although inactive, will stack into heavy cover when it's cold. Just my $0.02!
kelly
I always go small in bad weather my self. Just try a 1/8-1/4 oz jig with a grub and tie a 1 1/2 tube with just a hook in it about 1 foot up the line. The surprise is most of the fish will be hooked on the tube. The jig spacing holds it off the bottom and I think a largemouth is not as aggressive when cold, not chasing larger prey. This is my opinion but it might be worth a try and might work for you. ominousone
For the weather your talking I'd go with a suspending jerk bait, chatterbait, spinnerbait, and a jig/pig if the wind is calm. With high wind there's no way that your going to have a chance with a jig. I'd spend 3/4 the day with a suspending jerk bait in my hand personally. King Bait Co.
I tried just about every thing and found I had better luck with a stik bait rigged wacky. I would throw it in the weeds and let sink all the way to the bottom deadstik it for about 10 to 15 sec. Then I would drag it on the bottom about a foot to two feet then I would get a couple taps. If they didn't take it I wold pop it to the top and they would go for it that way but a few missed it. Let it hit the bottom and shake it with out pulling it to far and then they would smash it.
