Hello,need Bucktail Spinnerbait Help

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I am new here. I just started making my own lures and did quite well with my musky bucktails on Friday night, although it was a bit messy

Tonight I started making bucktail spinnerbaits and they proved a bit harder. I bought all my gear from Luremaking.com and I don't think the girl quite knew what I had in mind. She assured me it would all work, but he stirrup clevices won't fit through the blade holes, the beads etc. are too small for the spinnerbait wire forms, and bending the wire forms on a musky spinnerbait is pretty hard. Is there a tool I can do this with, or a technique maybe with my plyers that's not too hard for a gal?

I am also trying to find an online tutorial of making musky bucktail spinnerbaits but can't find one. Any thoughts or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Also, great site.

Thanks all.

Joey

Joey,

Welcome to the fray known as the Tackleunderground.com. There are two musky spinner tutorials right here on TU; on the top menu bar, there is a button called "How-To", click on that. One of the tutorials is called, "Making Flashabou Musky Bucktails" published by Cuttem Jack and the other is "Bending a Musky Spinner" published by me. There is another tutorial titled, "Bending loops in 0.062" Wire" published by Yake Bait that deals with bending the thicker wire sizes.

Luremaking.com has The Canadian Guide to Lure Making that you can download. It is a pretty good "cookbook" showing the component sizes for making various lures. Are you living in Canada? There are several places in the US that offer a good bang for the buck; however if your a Canadian resident, with postage and taxes, Luremaking.com is probably a better deal for you. Nova and Musky Snax can tell you places to get your supplies "Up North."

When I make musky spinners, I use .051 or .062 wire, #4 stirrup clevises, size 7, 8, 9, 10, or 12 blades (I like the Indiana blades), size 3/0, 5/0, and 6/0 treble hooks, bodies and beads with .052 or .063 holes (large enough to clear the wire), skirts or bucktails to suit my design, and possibly a bucktail coil for Flashabou.

For a bass or trout spinner, I use .035 wire, #2 stirrup clevises, size 2, 3, 4, or 5 blades (I like the French and Indiana blades), size 8, 6, 4, or 2 treble hooks, bodies and beads with .040 holes.

Joey, I'm afraid your going to have to sort through you supplies and figure out what you've got and try to figure out what you need. Almost forgot, wire bending tools... I use the Boogs Tacklemaker that I got years ago. Stamina sells it for about $50.00 out of MN. Otherwise, it's round nose pliers, electrician's pliers, vise grips and what ever you can find to bend that large size wire.

Good luck,

Hi Joey, Welcome to TU! Your going to get lots of different opinions on bending wire and how to do it. Sometimes it varies based on age and the amount they make. Sometimes some of these guys are just damn hard core.(YakeBait:worship:) I use a wireformer from Hagens and would not try to bend one by hand for nothing. Problem is it was $130.00 plus$30.00 for the heavier dies to bend the larger wire. But my bends are perfect every time, and I can bend wire every day of the week all day long if I wanted to and my hands would not be tired. There are cheaper ones available. dont know how they work or if they would hold up to heavier wire that is needed for musky baits.

PS You two are quick, when I started typing noone had responded yet! LOL:)
