Otdrzman
I found this site a couple weeks or so ago. Man what a wealth of information. Hopefully you guys can give me a hand. I am having trouble finding a stout 5/0 hook for my 3/4 ounce jigheads that I use for striper fishing. I have a Do-It Style "9" Shad Head Jig mold. It calls for an Eagle Claw 630-635 hook. I have tried these and they are just to flimsy for me. Does anyone happen to know which model number the Mustad hook in this jighead swimbait.com - Big Hammer Hand-Poured Swimbaits, Premium Soft Plastic Lures and Jig Heads happens to be? It states that it is a Mustad Ultra-Point. I have found several of them online but I am not sure which on it is. Thanks for the help. Spike-A-Pike
While I was at the TU meet a couple of weekends ago, I overheard someone in the know mention that Captain Hook was not only a great supplier of hooks, but a wealth of technical hook information as well. This link should take you to were you can either call or email your question. I also heard their pricing is pretty good. Good luck. LedHed
Otdrzman Take out the center pin in your mold with a dremel or a file and try the Mustad (bang for the buck) 32786 BLN or Gamakatsu 604 (very good mid priced). You can also use Owner (high dollar) 5319-159 5/0 or 5317-148 4/0. If you can find it - the VMC 8631PS is a top notch hook (not offered in the US anymore). Barlow’s and Stamina are good for smaller orders. You might find other TU members to split larger bulk lots….
Ogajiga
"Ledhed", is the VMC 8631PS a 60* EC 413 equivelant? Looks like you covered all the best choices to replace the Shad 9 635 except for the UP 91725D. "Otdrzman", if you don't want to modify your mold, the 3/0 & 4/0 91725Ds I use fit 635 molds though never looked at a 5/0 or larger. The 32786BLN is indeed "bang for the buck" and the 91725D offers the same heavy duty quality in a longer shank narrower bite hook.
Otdrzman
Thanks guys. I will check them out. I need something with a large gap in order to have enough hook out of the shad bodies that I use with them.
LedHed
HJ “Is the VMC 8631PS a 60* EC 413 equivalent?” No - it would be the 635, like the perma steel finish better than the sea guard finish. The VMC 8631 is similar to the VMC 9131 – different points (think its cone vs. cutting point). Otdrzman The 32786BLN is really popular out here in So Cal for swimbaits. The gap is a lot bigger than the 630/635.
