Artificial All The Way
I put a half a yellow crayon in about 2/3 a cup of 500 and it worked. I have been using old plastic to color. didn't have any yellow so while looking for a marker to cut open I found a box of crayons. I searched but didn't find any threads on crayons. Have you guys tried this? Just ordered a gal with several colors. Thanks for the new addiction. Jay
Artificial All The Way
Here's a couple shots. Sorry, they're from my cell. The lures look and feel just like all the others. Two tone yellow bellies, solid yellow, white
King Bait Co.
I know how did you think of that. That wouldn't even have crossed my mind. I hope you used non toxic crayons. I don't what PETA slapping a law suite aginst you for posinig fish with crayons. I might try them this weekend. My kids have a thousand of them I hope they won't miss any. Do they smell when you put them in. or do you put them in when you heat up the plastic.

nova
Does the crayon foam up when it melts? What are crayons made of besides the color? www.novalures.com
King Bait Co.
I think some form of wax.
Richard Prager
HOW IT WORKS: Crayola® crayons are made from two basic ingredients:paraffin wax and pigment. The wax blend is delivered to Binney & Smith in heated tanker-train cars and stored in two-story silos. for a detailed and fun explanation take the Crayola Factory Tour. Delw
Wax colors have been used for years, they are a little tricky to you and need to be extreamly thin chips or they wont melt properly. if you get a clump in the plastic take it out with a spoon. Wax colorants come in 2 forms a liquid oil and a solid block of wax. the wax works better than the oil, but the oil does work just doesnt desolve as well. When Bobby and I first started pouring we were using wax color chunks. that was in 2001? look for some posts on here from 2002-03 when this site first started you should find one of mine listing what brands and colors worked best. No post on using them for color came up. I was just looking for anything with a liquid color that I thought wouldn
bojon
I have been using oil pastels for over twenty years with good and bad results. The flourescent colors work great, much better than the dyes sold for soft plastic baits, and they can be added after the plastic has been heated, they do not bleed, and stay bright. That said, when mixing some of the other colors from different companies, you can get some wild results. The oil pastel sticks disolve very well in the heated plastic.Oil pastels are like ADULT CRAYONS used in art classes.Ask some one who is into art work, and they would be happy to give you a bit of a stick.A 1/4 inch piece will color a cup of plastic. King Bait Co.
Do you get the oil pastels at the art supply stores? How much do they cost? Then can you mix the colors to make a diffrent color.
bojon
The oil pastels I use were bought at HOBBY LOBBY in their art section. They cost about $3.50 for a set of 12 sticks. I think that was about right. It's been awhile. Yes you can mix colors ,BUT,I have some tube lures that looked great only to change color dramatically over night.I mixed some of the new colors with some that were twenty plus years old.Went from tan,to green.I find that that was my worst failure.I recommend trying the flourescent colors, you can add them before you heat the plastic.I made some tubes that had a body of charteuse,a black back, and a flourescent red belly. There was no bleeding to other colors.I placed them in a baggie of white lures, and left them in the car on a warm day,to test if they would transfer to the white. They didn't and that is a improvement on dyes, unless I got ahold of bad dye. If you send me your e-mail address,I will send some pictures of the box of oil pastels, and the tubes.I have to use my cameras program to send.Sorry. braveviper
You know, its bad enough stealing the wifes tupperware for mold making. Now I will be lifting the kids crayons.....
King Bait Co.
Rember braveviper their not the kids crayons if you paid for them. You were lending them to your kinds. Untill you found a good use for them. Like I tell my kids Its not your wii untill you get a job. Their ages are three, four and elven they have a while till they tell me to shut up. I figure I can get some jabs in before they hit their teenage years. Then I will get mine with blood pressure pills.
nova
Quetion:- what happens to the wax after it's heated in the plastic? If it remains, wouldn't it reconstitue and make the bait stiffer? www.novalures.com
bojon
The wax is what made me go with the oil pastels.I figured the wax would set up and do like Nova said. I thought about using regular pastels, they are a lot more like chalk. They would have to be ground up pretty fine and should be like the powders sold for the plastic.I would have tried this but couldn't find a mortar, and pestel(spelling?)Like drugists use. One Sock
Well the sticks I made sat all day yesterday and today, took them over to the local park with my nephew. he was fishing the originals and I fished the crayon baits, we both scored early, taking 1 LM each, nothing for the next hour or so, switched to a crayon frog and the fish didn't seem to care, I cranked the handle twice before a decent size lm took the frog whole. the baits didn't feel any different than the originals except a little bit heavier. it might actually help the frogs a bit as the crayon pieces floated in the plastic prior to heating. One thing i did notice.. the crayons melt way faster than the plastic cooks, so short burst on the plastic till I see the crayons melt, then a quick stir and then back to regular heating.. Now the problem with crayons is they come 64 different colors to a box.... Think crayola will sell me 50 lbs of golden rod yellow or plum purple? I have poured about 7 different colors now both in frogs and sticks, I have some colors that I could not make straight up....like peach with orange flake, plum red with green and purple flake, green apple with red flake, the list goes on and on I'm calling it here... * Crayonbaits.com lol the non toxic alternative to soft plastic fishing...maybe I can pack them up like crayons all stick baits standing up with an individual wrapper around each one stating the color. Like I said unles you can find a color in bulk, it's probably not worth it, but for fun and custom colors it doesspice up the ordinary 5 drops of this 4 drops of that
King Bait Co.
I am not sure. I think I seen a show on Crayons you might be able to get just one color. If I rember right it was on A n E or History channel. Try to Email Crayola they might sell them that way or they would know if sombody does. I think their is a whole store that is all Crayola stuff.
