Old Fenwick Blank

Hi Guys ,bought some tackle making stuff off a guy on the weekend and got a old fiberglass fenwick blank with it. The blank is brown and has FS 908-2 it comes in two pieces one measures70" the other measures22" and slides down the longer section to extend the base.The OAL is 89"when joined,the colors of the two pieces match. This thing is really quite stiff,every time i pick it up i picture a 50+ musky on the end of it. My first question does anyone know what the code means (fs 908-2) and second do you think this is a hacksaw job having two pieces like this.

That looks like a fly rod designation, 90 means 9 ft, 0 inches; 8 means 8 weight; and -2 means 2 peice. So it was originally a 9ft rod that has broken and they made it a much shorter, much stiffer rod.

edit: I reread your post and I was wondering a couple things. First, is the printing on the long section or the short? Second, the short sections slides down the long section like a telescopic rod?

The printing is on the long section about six inches from the butt and yes the short section slides over and down the blank.The tip measures 0.0135"and the butt is 0.900 on the short section.When the pieces are joined the decal is 2" above the joint. When joined there is no play or wobble in it .there,s 3" inside the base is this enough to use as an extension that i could epoxy and start wrapping.It would be my first build so if it,s already been butchered i can,t really do any more damage ,just a thought. If the blank was actually designed this way i would hold off and build it later when i,ve gained some experience and build it the way it was meant to be done. Hope this makes sense to someone out there i just read it and well i,m a little dizzy,lol

i can't imagine it being a fly rod w/ a .900 base. Probably about 2" overlap where the two pieces telescope together to account for 92" combined length you measured.

you shouldn't have to do anything special with the telescopic section. Add your grips and real seat to the lower portion and guides to the main part. Just extend the rod so that two pieces are tight when in use. This is a pretty common feature in bass/musky rods that are 7'6" or longer.

Thanks for the response guys, Dude i think you nailed it, i must of spent 2hrs last night checking other sites to find what those numbers meant, without any luck i might add. The FS really had me stumped kept thinking FIBERGLASS SALT,bit of a brain fart i guess. Thanks again Jim

just a guess on the FS part, but batson/forecast blanks have an IFS90x "flipping series" so that is what tipped me off. I have a 904 going in right now and if you have an 8 i can see why you were thinking of 50" muskies:eek: the 904 is a stout rod.

sounds like you guys got it figured out, i was mostly guessing anyway. i just know how fly rods are labeled. i did some more research and i will take a stab at the FS......Fenwick Spinning....just a guess though...

It sound like it is a older (ferralite)sp? blank and FS designates spinning, FC is casting.

Sounds Like a Flippin Stick to me ... FS but also from the way it is built.

First i,d like to thank everyone for they,re input. My fenwick fs 908-2 would appear to be fs=fiberglass spinning, 90inches, 8 heavy , 2piece. However it is telescoping so the flipping stick thing is still an issue in the back of my mind. When i decide to build it what would stop me from going spinning casting or flipping. I should point out i,ve never used a flippin stick and wouldn,t no it if i had one in my hand.Plan on doing some research on the topic.

you can make whatever you want out of it - spinning or casting. Characteristics of a bass flipping stick can also make a good musky rod, ocean jigging rod.. who knows... Pick an application that benefits the style of fishing you would use such a rod for and just pick components & guides that are in line with that.

Most of the time i buy a blank for some specific application, i hold it and think "man this would be great for X"... beauty is in the eye of the beholder i guess
