First day on the water...

Recommended Posts

After a 536 mile drive, we pulled into my son's driveway and parked the boat. Two days later, I found myself on the Jersey City Flaowage with my uncle and cousin.

We enjoyed about 10 hours on the water catching up on the last 9 months, teasing and joking, and getting 13 nice pike... we could have limited out with 15 fish, but they would been smallish. The water temps are still pretty cool and the pike have been along the shore line. No small mouth bass or musky so far.

Planning to be on the water again Wed., Thur., and Fri. The only down part so far was my motor decided to die on the way back to the dock. Hopefully, it is just a minor problem and should back in service soon.

Sorry about your motor problems , had such last year too , so I had to row(only have a small collabsible boat)for weeks at season start , since many people like myself didn't bother for motor maintenance through the winter , and all the maintenance services anywhere in Hamburg were stuffed with work , so that it took so long to get my outboard running again :(!

Taught me a lesson : Maintain your stuff in winter and not a day before your first trip:whistle:!

But otherwise you should consider yourself lucky for such a great season opening , over here I started out rather slow for once more , I didn't even catch a single nice pike so far , my season opener was a medium sized asp , that struck my "Rapala Down Deep Fat Rap" in my favourite swim , a feeder of the river "Elbe" in Hamburg .

Last weekend my wife wanted to go to some fleamarkets instead of fishing , but luckily for me , one of those events in Hamburg took place next to one of the many canals and ponds in the city , so I could make some casts , whilst she was spending money:wink: !

Tried a small "Fat Rap" , and after a "Shakespeare Big S" , but finally only one of my homemade "Banana-Lures" (check gallery) convinced a small pike to have lunch .

I was heading out for more , but when fishing , time passes so fast and soon my wife got back and I had to leave :(.

Only hope , things would get better:wink: !

Greetz , diemai

Well gents,

Just got to the house after an 8 1/2 hour drive from WI back to Belleville, IL. The last hour of it was spent playing with some pretty nasty thunder storms and wind gusts that felt more 120 kt wind shear.

The boat engine wasn't as bad as it could have been, a blown head gasket and a bad over temp switch; $50.00 and 2 hrs worth the labor. Also, another great father and son bonding period. I have to take my hat off to my son and his ability to improvise on the fly. There was no damage to the cylinder walls or pistons, and he was able to get us back on the water in a couple of hours. The boat ran great the last 2 days of fishing. Thursday, was just me and Brian on the water and we must have caught and released at least 25 northern pike.

Friday, Brian and I worked on the engine awhile to finalize a few repairs after the parts came in and along with my cousin, Kris, we had another great day on the water. Kris is heading back to Montana June 1st where she is a guide/wrangler/packer in Glacier National Park. We had a blast and Kris wanted a fish fry before she heads west; and the fishing gods where good to us - we bagged our limit of 15 pike. All the pike I caught and a pretty fair number of the fish Brian and Kris caught where on what Brain calls, "Daddy made." These are the Pike and Bass in-line spinners I posted in the gallery mid-May 08. I tossed musky in-lines too, had a few pike take a swipe at them, but no muskies. We also got a few small mouths to hit, they were still out of season so they all went back.

Anyone fishing around Tomahawk, WI - the pike were hitting on bright colored in-line spinners (fire tiger, orange and yellows, red and silvers) bucktails and skirts with either a #4 or #5 French style or fluted Indiana blade design. The camera is still on the boat; so I'll post a few pics tomorrow.
