squigster
I just made a 2 piece pop mold for 4" straight tail worms and I am having a problem when I pour them that the plastic dont make it to the end of the tail most of the time. The tails have a taper at the end so I dont if it is too thin in the cavity or what. It goes all the way to the end sometimes but not always. I get the plastic super hot and pour a very thin line. I sprayed the cavities with Pam before I poured hoping it would help the plastic get down there and it did seem to do a little but not fix the problem. I already coated the cavities with elmers. Any ideas on what to try? Can you heat POP before you pour? Do I need vents? Thanks!
Vodkaman
A picture of the mold and bait might help people see the fault. My first thought, is the end of the tail vented? Without an air vent, as the plastic is poured, the air in the thin section cannot get past the plastic and has no where to go. If this is confirmed as the problem, the solution is simple and the existing mold can be fixed.

Thanks! depending on how thin it is,your plastic will have to be hot, the other thing is to cut a groove on each side at the bottom of the tail out, this will help the air escape and flow better. hacksaw width is fine and about pin dia depth .015-.
HJS
I second the need for a tiny vent at the far end from the pour hole. Also, I preheat my 2-piece mold in the oven at its lowest setting, 170F. Hopefully the warm mold will delay setting time by 10-15 seconds. I just finished my first successful 2-piece mold and am having my own pouring problems. My post requesting help will appear shortly.
squigster
I cut the vents last night but have not tried pouring them yet. I think one of my problems at least from what I gather in this thread may also be that I cut the pour cones too deep. I think the plastic may be clogging in the cone. May have to rework the whole deal. I will try the mold with the vents tonight and will keep you posted. In regards to the pour spouts "cones" I have an idea. I have a few aluminum molds and obviously when you pour your baits you end up with a left over plastic cone at the top that you have to cut off. I thought that if you kept some of them placed your baits in the wet plaster and placed these cones at the top of your baits and up against the edge of the mold you would not have to drill any holes when you are done and you would end up with something similiar to an aluminum mold if you made a two piece mold. Also, do all you guys preheat your POP molds before pouring? Simplistic I know, but I think it would work. Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it. Zbass
I haven't made 2pc POP molds for a while, but used to insert a drinking straw in the end of the master to make a pour hole. Then used a kinfe to make a cone. Zbass
