FishinsMyLife
I know ya'll probably get questions like this a lot, so I'm apologizing now...I want to start to pour plastics. I just want to start off with something easy like a plain old Senko. I know I'll have to order a mold and plastic, but I am unsure of what else. I also don't know what kind of plastic to get. I have been reading so many old threads that I can't take anything else in. I also have a bag of old soft plastics that have been torn up from fish and are now unusable. Is it possible to melt them down and use them to make new baits, or would I be better off not even trying that? I have watched the video about pouring plastics and that helped me out some... Any help would be greatly appreciated. Edited June 20, 2008 by FishinsMyLife
Spike-A-Pike
FishinsMyLife, 1. Welcome to the Tackleunderground. Why don't you introduce yourself on the On Board forum so we get to meet you? 2. There is a new video in the Member Submitted Tutorial forum by daveh titled An Introduction to Pouring Plastics... You can get there by the link on the TU Home Page, OR by selecting the "How To" button on the top menu bar, OR by selecting the "Forums" button on the top menu bar and scrolling down to the Member Submitted Tutorial forum. Heck, there may even be a few more ways to get there thanks to the new site upgrades. 3. After you view the video, you'll be able to ask specific questions on areas you need help with. Good luck and thanks again daveh for your video.
nova
One big tip is don't use re-melts. Too many additives in various baits as well as the moisture the baits have collected will cause the plastic to bubble like a volcano. Get yourself fresh plastic and start properly. www.novalures.com
FishinsMyLife
Alright, I've watched the Intro To Pouring video a few more times. I would like to know few things. What kind of plastic should I buy and where should I buy it? How do you control how soft your baits are? What would be a general guideline of how long to heat the plastic before pouring (heat for 2 minutes, check to see if it is thin enough, reheat in smaller time amounts until it is ready, don't burn it)? In the video, he added 50 drops of color for 4 ounces of plastic. Is that a good general guideline to follow for color? Salt makes a bait sink/ weight more (I think). Should I just experiment to find the sink rate/weight that I want or is there a rule for this? Thanks for the help so far and any more help is appreciated. Thanks for the How-To Video daveh. macbor
Hey, Del has a great starter kit for sticks, will get you everything you need to get going Del-Mart Molds? Good luck and be safe!!! Rich
Spike-A-Pike
Sorry about having you view the video again - I just brain farted, no other excuse... Happy you asked your questions; there are three stickies in the front/top of the Soft Plastic forum that addresses the very questions you've asked. 'Best' Plastic - an on going debate on the subject. Don'ts for Newbies covers just that... and some good info on pouring safety. Soft Plastic Cookbook - a growing collection of color combinations. Remember, some of the answers are subjective, nobody starts off as an expert, your going to have to try a few pours (and make a few mistakes) to develop your processes. Good luck. nova
As far as the number of drops goes some company's color requires less drops than some other company's. Generally in the stick recipies will state what company's color they are using. The softness of the baits is controlled number one by the type of plastic you buy(not the name brand) and you can always add softner which is available from the same company you buy from. The heating end of it depends on the micro you are using. each one will heat differantly. Make sure you get one that has a turntable. You will have to experiment to see how yours will do. Start with short times like 1 1/2 min. Then stir and heat again for 30 sec. and so on till you get it hot enough to pour properly. www.novalures.com
daveh
nova is rirght on the mirowave. mine takes 2min and its just about ready. 30 seconds more and its ready. when making worms i just add a little salt as i shown so it still floats off the bottom. stick baits are differant. follow dels recipe on stick baits. you will get to no your mirowave and how long it takes. when i first started pouring i melted down a bunch of store bought baits with no problems but now i only use the good stuff. i like lc 536 but going to try dels. i like my black baits black so i do 50 drops in 4oz but the recipes on this site and dels will show you the way. i think the hardest part of pouring is getting the color the way you want it. outdooradvantage
I also started out with a Del's Stick Kit. I opted for the 4 1/4 , 5 1/4 combo. It is a great starter kit and it will make perfect worm's every time. Once you get the feel for it you can add mold's and buy your supplie's in larger quantatie's. Good luck........... BlazerSC
Brian is definately correct I think this is an addiction and it costs you money and time just like any addiction I looked at the Orders History link the other day Ouch!! but you should see the 10" Blackberry worms I did the other night and there is nothing like catching bass on a bait you made what a blast. Hey guys maybe we need a support group.

daveh
i come to TU everyday for support. i am mold poor right now. it is great catching fish on your own baits, i have not used a store bought plastic bait this year. last week i was on a 200 acre lake that gets pounded and there was a bass tourny on it. all the guys i was talking to were not having any luck. i was on a point and a tourney guy was in front of me and he did not catch any thing. i threw out mt 10 1/2 in hand pour trick and landed a 3lb 11oz bass. he asked me what i was using and told him a big trick worm. wanted to know where i bought them and i said poured them in my basement and can`t be bought in stores. got to love it.
