New to the site with questiones

Recommended Posts

Hello there, first off I have never poured plastics before but am eager to start. My first project is to re-create a 6" solid body jerkbait. I am looking into contacting Bobstackleshack to see if they can machine me an aluminum two piece mold. I have one original jerkbait left that has produced solidly for years but the company that made them no longer does. I am willing to spend the $$ for an aluminum mold. One of my many questiones are if Bobstackleshack can't or does not make custom aluminum molds who do I contact? the other question is the original lure is a transparent white with flash foil in it. Where can I get flash foil, and it can't be as easy as mixing it in the plastic and pouring it into the mold, so how in the world do I do that. the other option is to pour my own mold so the bottom of the lure is exposed to the pour, and while hot insert the flash foil with tweesers, will this work or am I way off base. Thanks for any info

Welcome Shaane.

First off, there are three sticky's at the top of the plastics forum. These are well worth reading, especially about the safety aspects. After that, click the 'how to' tab at the top of the page and select 'member submitted tutorials'. The very first tutorial is a 'how to' for plastics. There may be more plastics tutorials in there. Just scroll down, every one a gem.

After all that reading, you should have a very good idea of the processes involved. Anything that you don't understand, you can try the search function and see if you can find a quick explanation. If you cannot find an explanation or answer to your satisfaction, then we all want to hear the question.

The first thing I would do, is to protect what you have, with a comprehensive set of photographs, preferably on graph paper, for sizing the pics. As for the next step, I'm not so sure that the aluminum is the best route, but if you have made your mind up, so be it.

I'm sure one of the experts will chime in with the best plan for this situation. Good luck with it.

The Aluminum is more that likely Mylar.

On a one piece mold inserted after a paritial pour, depending on the structure of the bait and the desired location of the insert.

I made a special bait for a while .. worm tail with a strip of Mylar laid in ... called it the Flasher jig for Speckeled Trout and had calls for it off and on for many years (after I had quit Mfg) very labor intense.
