squigster
Has any of you guys been able to pour Del's Horny Toad mold to get the full legs? An injector was suggested but I heard horror stories about them here so I am a little nervous. I poured the tails by hand but I suck at it and get flashing on the legs. I had an idea to pour some plastic for the tails from the top and insert a low pressure air compressor line to push the hot plastic into the tails. Am I crazy or does this seem reasonable? I already added vents in the tails. I typically use a presto pot so doing handpours for the tails isnt really what I want to have to do. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks! Spike-A-Pike
I wouldn't use any type of pressured air to hold full of hot plastic!!! The air that is preventing the plastic from flowing into all recesses of the mold will most likely prevent the forced air from going anywhere but back towards you - YOU WOULD BE AT A HIGH RISK OF GETTING BURNED!!! A better route to go would be draw air out the mold, causing the plastic to be drawn in. The could be accomplished by applying a vacuum to the mold. This is very easy to accomplish when building RTV and PoP molds (check Vodkaman threads and posts on vacu-venting) http://www.tackleunderground.com/forum/soft-plastics/11312-3d-legs.html http://www.tackleunderground.com/forum/soft-plastics/11056-hairy-worm.html Doing this to an existing aluminum mold should be possible; J & B Weld should make it reversible. Good luck.
Delw
The injector works but only if you use safety precuations and common sence , were wleding gloves full length. there are a ton of guys doing it. or the other stuff we talked about
squigster
Thanks for you comments guys. It got me to thinking about what I could do. I already added vents at the upper tips of the V tail but I dont know what I could attach to the back of the vent holes which are only 1/16" dia. vents that I could pull a vacuum with. I guess you would have to tap a bigger hole 1/2 the thickness of the vent side of the mold in the back with threaded fittings and attach a vaccum line to it to draw air through the vents. Anyone have any idea what mechanical apparatus you could use to vacuum this? I know someone here mentioned sucking air through a pipe but I am not up for that. Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated. Thanks!
squigster
Do you think this would work? Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices
Delw
Harbor frieght has/had vacumm pumps for 19 or 29 bucks, then you just tap a 1/8 pipe thread into the hole and suck vacum. on alum molds it doesnt always work as planned do to the plastic cools off pretty quick. on that particular mold I think it would be worth a try. one hose on each leg. squigster
Thanks Del, I'll give it a shot. If it works I may have to try it on a paca craw POP mold I made that wont pour the legs.
BIGDADDY814
I Find That If You Coat The Mold With A Light Coat Of Wd40 It Allows The Platsic To Flow To The Bottom Better.i Also Inject My Plastic And Usually On Big Baits That Consist Of A Good Bit Of Rubber , This Helps. No, The Wd40 Will Not Affect The Finish Product. I Usually Make About 40 Of One Color And Then Put Them In Cold Water For A Few Seconds And Then Put Them Into A 1-gallon Ziplock And Add Some Salt And Shake It -up.i Do This For Sweet Beavers Also And Works Great. Give A Try.
