Hookeyes

I use a 60 degree flat eye on finesse jigheads. straight eyes on mostly everything else. The straight eye won't snag as much grass. I also feel like (probably just in my head) a straight eye protects my knots from wood a little better. I can't say why but it just seems like a flat eye forces your actual knot to come in contact with any piece of cover it comes over. In rocks, I think a flat eye is easier on my knots. When I imagine my bait settling between two rocks, for some reason I can see the knot taking more of a beating with a straight eye. Like I said though, that might all be in my head and have no basis to it.

small jigheads for tiny grubs or tubes that I use in winter, I like to have a 90degree hook so the bait stays horizontal under a float. The greater the angle, the more horizontal a bait will sit on a tight line.

Turkeylegs1246,

Maybe I should have put his in another forum or asked the question a little differently. What do other people prefer in the jigs they make or fish as far as the hook eye is concern and why? I don't actually make jigs so I won't be trashing any molds. It was just a curiousity question.

I kinda thought the question silly. Each of my moulds uses specific hooks for that style of mould. I've seen some nice moulds ruined by somebody not using the size and style of hook recommended by the MFG. Use the jig hooks recommended for the mold you are using. You'll make better baits that way.

I understand what you are saying, and you are right to a certain point. I strongly believe in not modifying molds. But since I sell jigs for a business, I make what the customer wants with-in reason. I have yet to screw up a mold and make crappy jigs. There are guys that are dead set on certain hooks, and their is a reason for that because like mentioned above certain hook eyes do get snagged in different situations. If you are careful, you can modify any mold to what you want. I think modifying molds puts me as a seller in a unique position, because I may be the only one making those jigs, and they would have to come back to me for more. Just my thoughts on this.

Zbass,

Personally I use mostly 90 and 60 degree straight eye hooks. Mainly because the molds for the jigs I throw call for them. A few years ago when the flat eye hooks were all the rage I modified a few of my molds to accept them. Like Cadman, I aim to please the customer for the exact same reasons. Lately I have noticed that those same guys that wanted the flat eyes are now going back to the straight eye and the reasons are as varied as the colors available. Some of the new molds have the option for both styles and I do about 50/50 on the specialty heads.
