Ed Brabant
Has anyone used the hot plates with stirrers? The ones like in a lab that heat and stir liquids?
Travis
I use various hot plates and stirrers daily. Problem will be when the plastic goes to the gel state stirring is going to cease. Much better option are overhead stirrers. I have not used either for plastic but the overhead stirrer will work for sure no problems. Now if you are going to heat to the liquid state and transfer a stirring hot plate would work. But to be honest the cost is prohibitive and other methods like the DIY cheap drill press/ presto pot are quicker, easier and a fraction of the cost. Even if the stuff is bought from some of the lab surplus stores you are still cheaper the other route. I think the last cheap stirplates I ordered were nearly 500 bucks a pop. Ed Brabant
I saw 3 or 4 on EBay for $20-30. That why I was asking. They did have the $200-500 ones as well.
Travis
Good price for sure and worth just getting to mess around with if interested. Would be fine as a hot plate to sit preheated plastic on for use once you got the temperature set correctly.

Ed, I was talking with my son, who is a dentist, last night. He says that the lab stirrers he is aware of only stir liquids that are rather thin in consistency. He is going to check further for me. In the meantime I am working with a dremel drill stand to see if I can adapt it to stir the cup I was telling you about. I will report more as my experiments go along. BTW, the stirrer that I had rigged didn't stir well enough. The bottom burned. David
Ed Brabant
The one that I made for my presto pt using motor 6142K45 from www.mcmastercarr.com worked great. i think the key was the paddle. It scrapes the bottom of the pot. It has staggered teeth on the bottom. One pass cleans up after the other. I have Friday off and I will take a few picture and post them. The only problem is the pot will only do one color at a time. i am picking a second micro wave off a lady at work tonight for $5.00. The last one was for free so I guess $5.00 won't break me. i also am picking up a double station hot palte. Brand new in the box for $20.00. thank you craigs list. I am hoping that with the plate I can keep the plastic hot but not burn for dipping tube stye swim baits. I am going to give that pre form for the swim bait a try tonight or Friday. Thanks.
