bear21211
I went to wally world and bought me some Bondo Resin and came home to make my 1st mold. I used a piece of tile like I read on here to use as my bottom. I then stole the kids legos and made my frame for my mold. Super Glued it down to tile. I got the baits I wanted to mold (GY Senkos) and washed them in soapy water.I dried them and spaced them in the mold form and glued them down also. I filled my mold with water and determined the amount of resin I needed to mix. 6 12 oz and mixed my resin. I poured my mold from the corner and everything looked great. Baits were covered with about 7/16 " resin. Upon dis assembly of my form , which was very easy it came right apart with very little effort I saw what I do think is a good outcome. All of the baits I used in the mold were a melted mess. They seem to have left good impressions in the resin with detail that I can see but it is all in the cavity's of the mold. I am going to try and get the remaining plastic out of the mold but I do not know if the mold will be any good or not yet. What did I do wrong or what could I do in the future for this not to happen again?
nova
I think you used too much catalyst. The reaction produces heat and the more catalyst you use the hotter it will get and it will melt/soften your plastic masters. www.novalures.com
bear21211
That makes since, so how much less should I use than what the label says it said 48 drops to 4 oz of plastic i used 75 drops to almost 7oz of resin?
nova
Try 1/3 less. That should reduce the amount of heat generated. www.novalures.com
bear21211
That was the ticket Nova! I lessoned my catalyst and worked awesome. Now If I may ask one more question. After the mold was ready I poured a batch to see how they worked. They both came out fairly good . The detail was not messed up with the first one at all that I could see. The second one (5" Yum Dinger) came out perfect from what I can see. My only problem is it is like the slot that I pour into is not wide enough for the worm to come out of very easily Can they be opened up and if so what do you use for a guide to open them to?Do they need to be opened all the way to the side of the worm or do you want to leave what I would call a little shoulder or top to the opening? Sorry for asking so many questions But I have not sen a thread address that. Am I doing something wrong when I am pouring the resin or is this something you must address on each mold? nova
I assume you cleaned up the edges of each cavity. If you didn't, this needs to be done. The other thing is that if you are dealing with full-round baits; the opening of the cavity will be small and you will need to open them a little. You must be careful when you do this so as not to mark up the mold or take too much off. I use an exacto-type knife and proceed slowly. Don't try to rush it; take your time. A way to reduce this step is to take your baits and flatten one side of them just a little. www.novalures.com
Smallie
What I have done with round baits is put the glue down for 3 or 4 baits making a strip as wide as the baits diameter. Place the baits on the glue and then put something flat on top of all the baits. Add weight until the bait is making the contact you desire. After the glue has dried, remove the weight. You may see some distortion of the bait. Let it sit overnight and it will get better. I also pinch the bait at the widest point to help it return to shape. bear21211
Thanks guys much appreciated. I will do that and will try the weight on the worms on my next one.
