Fish_N_Fool
Ok guys, first I want to say tnx to Chris of Al's Worms for finally gettin me on this site after 3 weeks and a doz. or more emails I finally got registered, Tnx Chris. Now on to the good stuff. I'm kinda new to lure making. I have made one mold before but I had a guy pour it for me because I had never poured plastic before and had no clue how. So this is my first ever hand pours from a mold I made. After watching him I figured it couldn't be that hard. I made another mold {my first one broke, ya can't drop plaster molds I found out.LOL) It is a 2 piece mold with a sprew hole? I think thats what it is called. In case you can't see it there is a grove in the top of the lure (look close at the 2nd one from the top) for the hook to ride in that helps keep it weedless, which is why I needed to make the mold a 2 piece. Anway it has 2 lures in the mold to make 2 at a time. I had never mixed plastisol or any thing before. So I got the stuff from lurecraft and tried it. I poured a few first from old baits I cut up and melted to see how it would go. Then I mixed my first batch of plastic added some color and some gold and black glitter. I got way to much gold glitter in it I thought. But here is how they turned out!!!!! Needless to say I was amazingly pleased with them for being a first try! I think I'm going to call this color "Watermelon Gold". I can't hardly wait till spring to try em out.
Bullet Weight
Good looking baits you have there, Fish_N_Fool!! I am fixing to mold a couple of new designs that I have had in my head for a while with some of that RTV from LC. I'll post pics on here when they come out.... Fish_N_Fool
This is my second batch ot plastic out of the same mold. I'm working on a new mold of this bait out of resin with 5 cavities in it. That will be my production mold , it will be a 2 piece stand up mold. I'm also working on a new bait that I tested in my creek yesterday and it looks fantastic in the water. I'll make a new mold for it soon too. Senkosam
Nice lures and color. How did you get the glossy surface? There is no such thing as too much glitter or glitter that is to large. At times .062 hex is what the fish ordered! Sam
Fish_N_Fool
Hey sam , I coat my molds with varithene till they shine. Pour my [plastic and they come out shiney just like the mold. if the mold is dull you get dull baits.
Senkosam
Where do you buy varithene and under what company name?
Fish_N_Fool
Hey Sam. It's spelled Varathane and you can get it at any walmart or hardware store.
alsworms
How quick is the drying time on that varathane? I have been using polyurethane and I need to find a better product. Chris
Fish_N_Fool
The Varathane didn't hold up to the heat. After a few pours it turned on me and pealed. I'm trying Devcon now to see how that works. If you can get a shiney mold that hold up to the heat the bvaits will come out shiney.
Big Splash
For shiney smooth baits out of plaster, try using a bar top epoxy. Two or three coats and the baits come out awesome. You can see a photo of a mold done that way on my web site.
Fish_N_Fool
Tnx for the info Splash, Where are you getting your epoxy from? I can't find anyone that doesn't want to sell it by the gal. & I don't want that much.
