mr max Posted August 25, 2008 Report Share Posted August 25, 2008 How do you separate a 2 piece rod that is stuck together at the ferrule?I would appreciate any feed back from members concerning this, as I keep running across this problem lately talking to fellow fisherman who now have unwanted joined one piece rods.They seem to think not taking apart their rods after fishing and being left in a hot car over time caused the situation. Mattman Posted August 25, 2008 Report Share Posted August 25, 2008 Cold. Things shrink when they get cold. Rod blanks are hollow tubes and when they shrink due to cold, the outside diameter gets smaller and the inside diameter gets larger. Use a twisting motion to separate. Some will tell you to heat the female portion and that's wrong. While the outside diameter does increase, the inside diameter shrinks and you are actually making the joint tighter. LooksLikeSinbad Posted August 26, 2008 Report Share Posted August 26, 2008 I use 2-piece rods and I have been thinking lately that it is time for someone to invent a better ferrule. One that attaches and detaches quickly and easily without getting stuck or damaging the rod. Maybe a screw on one? Another thought I had is to create a ferrule that works the same as the current ones, but the outside has a small groove that your thumb would fit in to give you something to grip when turning the 2 pieces. I think a lot of times when they are stuck, the problem is that you can't really hold on to anything because the rod is round and slick, and you don't want to hold on to a guide for leverage. Take the rod and place it behind your knees and hold it with both hands(each hand on the outside of your knees). Bend your knees slightly and then gripping the rod tightly force your knees outward. Do not pull with your hands, they are only there to hold the rod steady. I know this sounds a little silly at first read, but give it a try. Thanks Nova for the method , I must admit I have always twisted the the two parts in opposite directions and so far I have been lucky. It is a problem that everyone faces at some time during their fishing career. I think it is the difficulty in gripping the rod tight enough and I have used the neoprene anti slip pads (sold in auto shops for laying on dashboards and the like) with success. With new rods before I even use them I wax the ferrule with good old candle wax, this does not make them loose or slippy but does stop the sticking. An oldtimer showed me that on the river bank one day in the 70's. Never forgot it. That's what this sport/hobby is all about; passing on the infromation. You grip the rod with your right hand BELOW the stuck ferrule (on the handle side) and your left hand ABOVE the ferrule (on the tip side). 2. Your buddy faces you and does the same thing at the same time. He grips the rod with his right hand ABOVE the ferrule (on the tip side) and his left hand BELOW the ferrule (on the handle side). 3. On a count of "3" both of you pull with the right hand and push away with the left hand. Do not twist the ferrule - it just always pops out! My dad showed me this trick about 60 years ago. reelcues Posted August 30, 2010 Report Share Posted August 30, 2010 cold did the trick for me as well. i bought a telescoping pitching allstar blank at an ICRBE expo that apparently someone had REALLY snugged up TIGHT. i tried to no avail to get it to come apart with reasonable force. finally went with the frozen veggies for a few minutes and then smacked it preety hard on a solid flor. came right loose. i was going to go with packing it in dry ice if that hadn't done the trick. i didn't want to twist the joint at all. i do have a fenwick blank that i did twist the handle on trying to get it off to redo the rod. i now have a shortened fenwick rod! by the way nose oil will corrode the metal ferrules over years(got that from a flyfishing website somewhere).
