Bearpaw
hey guys. I thank you for haveing me on the boards. I would like to say that I have been in the handpoured business only a short time. But I am up and comming on the east coast with some very active and energetic people that promote my baits. Plus with a little hard work on my part as well slamming the keys to get my baits out. I give out a tremedous amount of samples and if any onre is interested I will oblige. Just go to my website www.bearpawshandpouredbaits.com and leave your favorite colors, name and address. But I am not here to promote I am here on this thread to say something about some of the plastics I have been using. I have nothing bad to say about anyone of the plastisols or thier companies. I have been useing as 3g, Lurecraft and now form Del mart. All have different Charecteristics of hardening, settling, prices, shipping prices and the whole gamut. I have had equally good pours with all three I was looking for a cheaper, but better plastisol as we all are. I looked at your site with the help from senkosam (fishing Partner) and phone calls and conversations lately from Del Wilcox. I was conviced from the price and the settling process. This was the plastisol for me. The shipping was pricey but on a total, the plastic was about the same as Lurecraft. But with the lure craft due to the settling process I would have had to purchase a drill bit to mix the settlement. This would have brought the price up a little bit. 3gs they are nice guys and I never gave them a chance to see thier prices but they did give me 3 gallons to try.Which is a fantastic way to do business. But the settling process is the same as Lurecraft. Talking to Del I was convinced that the seperation method of settling was a selling point for me. I didnt have to purchase a bit to mix or when getting to the bottom of the barrel was a getting a consistant mix or not. Plus, I blend my plastics such as super sof with a super super soft then a little hardner. I do this for the reason of a soft bait with durability. If any of you have seen or tried my baits you know what I am talking about. So I always had to buy double the amount with a quart of hardner or I would but the hardner and take the plastic and mix. This process can be costly but hey I am never satisfied with my baits. I am always looking for an edge I have close to 106 colors which 104 are listed on the site. I do not rely on the salt as much as I do scents. The salts have a tendency to breakdown plastics and I use a different blend of scents . I do use alot of salt but not in high percentages. The salts that I use is usually a mixture of bait salt, flavored salts and seasonings. Anyway my piece is I had problems with the delmart plastisol when it first arrived in the 5 gallon bucket. I shook the bucket until my eyes bled. I poured the baits and it came out like hot water. There was very little consistancy and the bait would only last 2 or 3 casts. This was on a Saturday. I went to bed sick. I sent an email into Del explaining what I was dealing with. I was nice , I just wanted to know what I can do. The first thingthat goes through your mind is, are you going to take this back? and I should have stuck with the plastisol that had worked effectively. Del called my house on a Sunday Morning. We talked and he said stir the bucket instead of shaking it. Well I took an UNUSED toilet plunger and stirred the sh%& out of it and then I shook it some more. Needles to say that fixed the problem. The bait was still a little soft for me, so I had some hardner from Lurecraft and mixed the delmart plastic with the hardner. Now I have a nice consistant plastic for my customers. There arn,t many places you can call on a Saturday, Sunday or a holiday and speak to a real person about your problems. I needed to fill an order that day. I got my answers quick and when I wanted them and to talk to a nice gentlemen at that. Thanks Del you deserved this post. Bearpaw
redg8r
Welcome aboard bearpaw, Yeah Del is a good guy & hes worked hard to bring Calhouns line to the smaller manufacturers like ourselves. I use a paint stir stick to stir calhouns, other brands will need to have the hardener scraped or shaken like hell to pull to pull it off the bottom of the container. Calhouns is a lil hard right out the bucket, but hey I'll trade some softener in leu of a mechanical mixer anyday.
