drof99
I've been doing a lot of reading here. I've learned a bunch by watching some of the videos and looking over past posts. I've got another question for you guys that have been doing for awhile. I've read that 1 piece molds will leave a flat side on the baits. Do these work as well as a bait that has been molded out of a 2 piece mold? I've noticed that my Berkley baits seem to have a small flat side on them. I'm looking a 10" power worm. Does this mean that these baits are also poured into a one piece mold? I still on the fence as to which one I'd like to use. I'm leaning towards the one piece because of price. Thanks again for the advice .
RipLip
Well...Thats a huge question. I'm sure everyone that has looked at this question has just thought for a while about it. I guess I would have to say that it all depends on the bait and the application that would depict which type of mold to use. They both catch fish and that is a proven fact. A lot of the one piece molds I have are only because the bait is the type that would need an injection machine to fill all the small ends. I personally like two piece molds because I think they are faster with a pouring pot instead of pouring out of a Pyrex glass. You have to way a couple things like how many you want to make, how fast, what you are going to do with them personal or sell. Are you testing a bait in your area or not. Thats just a couple of diff. scenarios. As for the Berkeley 10" I believe it is designed that way for action purposes. There baits are all injected because of the volume there sold at so I don't think the guys over there are standing around with one piece molds pulling out baits one at a time. There molds are more like 300 baits at a time in 10 seconds. I personally like all the baits on this website better than the huge companies. This probably didn't help any but I don't think there is a straight up answer to that question. I bet you'll end up with both types and like them both the same for different reasons. Good Luck with your quest.
Vodkaman
Maybe there is someone within driving distance of your location that you could spend an hour with and see both types of mold. This would make the decision a bit easier. Also there are two types of commercially available mold materials, aluminum (expensive) and RTV (rubber, cheaper). Both get the job done, aly lasts a lifetime and holds much of its value for re-sale. You could really get stuck in and make your own molds. PoP (plaster of Paris) is very cheap and will make an excellent one piece, with only a little practise, 2 piece molds also, with a little more practice. RTV is also very easy to work with, just a little more expensive, but less hassle than PoP, as it does not require sealing etc. Lots of options that will keep you awake at night and lots of reading to do. Good luck with your new venture. Dave
drof99
Thanks for the advice guys. I think that I might just get couple of one piece molds to start. I'm really not looking to sell per say. Just for personal use and some close friends. But I also want to be able to produce great baits in a timely manner. I tournament fish and hunt alot so time is at a premium to me. Vodka you mention the RTV molds. I've done some reading here on those. How do they hold up? Are they fairly easy to get a two piece mold from? I see that you said you don't have to seal them, that would be a big plus in my book. I don't know if I like to plaster of paris stuff. In my past dealings with the stuff it can get messy. Keep the suggestions coming guys! Thank you!
braveviper
I will decide for you...Jump right in and get an expensive aluminum mold.It will last forever and someone will always take it off your hands should you tire of it. Its gonna end up that way anyway....You guys out there know what im talking about!
daveh
i use both and catch fish with both. 2 ppart molds are easier to pour just remember to top off. most one peice molds are pretty easy but molds like lizzard brush hogs flukes and any molds with small legs or tails can be tuff till you get the hang of it. start with a one piece worm not to hard. outdooradvantage
If you can afford it I would start off with a two piece mold, it will be a lot easier to start with. Del has some nice molds I have his 7in. curl tail and we do really well on them. If money is an issue one piece is the way to go. No matter what mold you start with I'm sure there will be more to follow as this is very addictive.......Good luck.............Jeff.........
