Anyone got any new ideas to work on this winter?

Recommended Posts

It's already fall and the only a few months before weather forces everyone back into their workshops for another winter of lure crafting. Anyone got anything new they're planning to try this year?

I saw an inquiry about anodizing aluminum spinner and buzz blades and thought that might be something interesting to look into and apply to my in-line spinners.

What have the rest of you got planned??? Remember, while it may be fun, home brewing beer isn't really making fishing tackle...

I dont stop fishing in the winter.

Pike in wisconsin thru the ice, walleye and sauger on the Illinois and maybe the Mississippi this year.

Am really kickin around the idea of designing a jig that cuts current really well.Heavy hook, about 1 to 2 oz.

Gots a pop mold in the oven as i write this from copying a jig a friend needs and realized thats probably how many inventors started out.

Im still looking for that million dollar idea that lets me hang up my tool belt.:lolhuh:

I will just be trying to learn the tricks of the trade this winter. Can't wait to see what I can come up with. Maybe I will get some inspiration when I finally get to start working on some hard baits. Hopefully I will get to spend some time on the ice to try some new color combos. It's been awhile since I've been ice fishing so I need to get back into the groove. :yay:

As from 1st of January thru 1st of May is predators closing time in my area and I won't get to fishing for non-predatory fish before end of march(don't expect too much ice anymore in Northern Germany these days) , I shall have some more time to spend in my workshop:yes: .

I want to make some more and different smaller crankbaits , that should have an appeal to perch and pike alike .

Also working on some new prototypes of a three-section swimbait , consisting of wood and metal sheet .

My firts bath tub tests looked promising , so if things get along well with that design , I just might go deeper with it in winter .

Also could use some more medium-sized spoons , lost a few this season so far , just to fill up my stock :

Loose one , build three new , and you'll never run out of lures , lol :lol:!

I am venturing into a couple of things. One being plastics. I started at the middle of the summer and it was supposed to be just a bit of a fun thing for me and Alex. Like everything else, I went way overboard andd now I have several people wanting them. Then they went and told the tackle shops that sell my rods and other baits I was making them. Then Alex went and caught the Big Pike and made the Paper and well you know. I am also finishing up my first Bamboo fly rod. I just am not sure that I have the patience that it takes to go into producing these to sell a good quality product. So I think I aam scrapping that Idea but I will post picts of the one I made just to brag and say I did one.

1. Like Bruce I plan on blowing up the garage using highly toxic chemicals anodizing blades.

2. I plan on getting high on plastic fumes while pouring a few baits.

3. Completing my experiment that all colors of powder paint tastes like chicken.

4. Last but not least, blow my retirement buying lure components instead of losing it in the market....

I'm going to make Musky/Pike size spinnerbaits. I'm slowly buying all components and tools now. It seems, it's going to be a lot of fun this winter. I setup a one week trip to Canada in next June and want to fish with my own spinnerbaits.

Regards, PSV

rsinyard - I think it was your inquiry that got me thinking about trying the anodizing aluminum blades.

psv - I enjoy making musky & pike in-line spinners. The last couple of years, I have gotten very addicted to catching them only on the lures I've made for the task. The members of the family I fish with most continue to raid my tackle box when I'm not looking.

MT - Sounds like you and Alex may be ready to go into this full time... Slow down or it will stop being fun. Congrats to Alex on his pike; any chance that the paper has a web-link where we could see it?

V-man - is the ice you're waiting on in your expected to show up in your cooler? I can almost see you sitting on a stool, in a parka and mukluks, sitting next to the barbie... It just doesn't look right.

Guys, sounds like in addition to fishing, some pretty cool ideas out there. I forgot to mention, I want to get this wrist rehabbed and working right before Spring, 2009.

1. Figure out how to make prototype lead baits? I have 2 spinnerbait, 2 buzzbait and a swim jig down on paper that I want to build.

2. Practice with the airbrush so I can at least paint basic patterns.

3. Build website showing the lures I make.

4. Try not to bother Chuck Vanover so much.

Sorry guys, but it's SPRING here, and I have nearly finished the boat!!

So besides trying to make a few lures after a 6 month break, I will be out there fishing, South Coast next weekend, Snowy Mountains the week after, then going up to Bribie Island (Queensland) the week after that. I have been listening to you guys all winter, now it's our turn. Hang in there-pete

Those awful winter months! I` guess I`ll just fish right through them.

The only time I see snow is on TV and as far as winter goes, that`s prime time for big bass in Florida. While some of you guys are looking out a frost covered window at the yard covered in a foot of snow,

I`m out on the St John`s river enjoying the day. Life is good.:)

My main goals will be to re-organize my shop for better flow of production and to start making fixturing for my electrostatic powder coat system and get it into operation, I have been procrastinating long enough.

Love to catch the trip to Australia with ya MT, but prior comittments are killing even a small jaunt to Florida :lolhuh:

Here in the SE it will be spoon jigging time! Ice? What ice? That is mostly a childhood memory around here! After spring, winter is my fave. But since I passed 60 yrs, I stay home and make crankbaits, paint spoons/jig and tie bucktails when the day won't reach 50 deg F. That means you can fish most days except in January and early February.

For me, i will fish the creeks till it freezes over then move over to the river. I always liked fishing musky in january down here, if you can stand the cold. I always have trouble finding a fishing buddy that time of year, everyones begging to go when its 70 degrees but you here a lot of excuses when it gets cold. the fishing is slow but when you move a fish its a looking to eat, they dont waste any energy just following that time of year. Fishing the creeks I like throwing gliders that time of year, work them really slow and really pick apart the hole. Well I guess what im saying is you cant catch any at the house so suck it up and put your long underwear on and fish. :P

Well where do I start with this winter. Oh I'm going to have my first child due on Nov. 17th so Im not sure what that will do for my winter plans. I have to repaint my bobhouse and get some ice fishing in. I would like to learn the basics of making a crankbait considering that is the only thing i had to buy this year besides line. The other thing is to get a good stock count of plastics for next season. It seems like every year you think you have a good supply and right in the middle of summer you find yourself behind with long nights of pouring. I guess it could be worse. I also would like to design a large 4-5" bodied grub like the old Powerbait power grubs I use to use in high school. Hopefully I can get at least one of these done and I'll feel good about it. :yay:

My project for the winter will be fishing as our tournament season in my area starts in mid September and runs till mid June. I hardly ever fish from the end of June thru the first of September and leave the lake to the wake boarders and skiers. Besides with our lake levels being so low, its a real hassel to get in and out. I have the luxury of pouring baits for those who would be fishing during the summer in other parts of the country.
