FishinFreaks
Okay. I'm ready to dig in and try this. I've got a junker to try it on. I've got an airbrush. Does anyone have a step by step of the process once the reel is taken apart? I'm wondering about prep - sanding? What grit? What about masking? Mask inside section of reel once spool is pulled out? Remove the worm gear, too, right? What kinds of paints to use? I like the metallics or glitter paints. Any harder to use? What kind of clear coat? Any tips and pointers along the way? It would just be nice to have something to guide me through the process rather than pick up a piece here or there. Thanks, guys.
clamboni
I wet sand with 400. Using HOK paint it fills it in. I mask off EVERYTHING that you can't see pretty much. Pay special attention where any parts contact the frame or sideplate. The tolerances are very specific, even overspray can cause problems. make sure to keep paint out of where the spool rides or it will rub.Overlap the edges with paint or you'll see what's under it. Prime metal parts. For plastic sideplates, I spray bulldog adhesion promoter after sanding. No real need to get all of the paint off before painting. I use hemostats and xacto handles to hold the parts, you need to figure out a way to hold them so you won't touch the painted surfaces. Try to keep the coats thin. Clear then reassemble.
