drof99
I finally got a chance to spend some time pouring and got to make more than just a couple. I've been pouring sticks and its pretty fun. I'm looking forward to the molds I have on order from Del. I've got a couple questions after some time pouring. Once the worms are finished what is the best way to get worm oil on them? Does it work better outside of the bag when they are laying there or is it better when they are already in the bag? Another question I have is when I am heating the plastic in the microwave I get a plastic smell. No surprise here. I added Anise this time around. If I add that should I still smell the plastic while heating? Does that mean I did not add enough scent? What do you guys find the best way to store unused plastic that has been colored? One last question, for now. While pouring is it best to wear any type of gloves to keep the scent of your hands off the bait? I wear some light weight gloves because of the heat but I don't think these block any scent. Edited October 21, 2008 by drof99
Zbass
drof99, Lets try to answer one at a time. 1. put some oil in a bag and move them around. I find that using a combo of rolling in salt and adding scent works for me. 2. See #1 3. you will still get a plastic smell when you add scent. As long as it does not smell scorched. If it smells scorched, try heating a little less time. Another way to tell if it is scorched is a yellow tint to the plastic. 4. how much scent are you adding? I just give mine a squirt and can smell it while it is heating. It doesn't take a lot as the scents are concentrated. 5. I don't wear any gloves while handling. I just make sure that my hands are clean. If you add scent in the bag, I think that will counter any oils from your hands. Hope that helps. drof99
That does help. Thanks zbass. I'm not getting a scorched smell when heating the plastic. It just smells like a a plastic swimming pool or raft that has been in the sun awhile. This was the first time that I added scent to the mix. The others were just practice. I could smell the Anise while heating but the plastic smell still stuck out. Could have been that I was already smelling it and just got the smell in my nose so it kind of stuck. Didn't smell burnt at all, and there was no yellowing. When you roll them in salt are they covered pretty heavily or just lightly salted? Hopefully all the questions are ok, I just want a nice finished product. By the way, I am adding salt during heating. I'm not adding as much as Del's site says though. JDBaits
Some brands of plastics smell more than others, let your baits sit over night then give them the smell test. If they are burnt youll know it and they will smell burnt, If ya only scorched the plastic a few of your baits will be discolored. Hope this helps
Zbass
After they have layed out for 24 hrs to fully cure, I just put them on a paper towel and sprikle salt from a shaker on them. Then I roll them around a bit to get a coating. Not real heavy f a coat but just a covering. All the questions are fine. That's how we learn. You may try the search function also. Post a pic when you get some good ones. Zbass
MTfishingrods
What is the purpose of adding the salt after the baits are finished ZBass?
Zbass
I do it mainly for packaging. I believe that it helps the baits lay better in the bag. Also, mixed with the scent I put in the bag I think it absorbs in a little. I have yet to catch that talking fish and ask what she or he thinks. The salt will come off in the water so it i mainly for bagging. Hope that helps. Zbass
