I'm a newbie at this

Recommended Posts

I have a 6 1/2" saltwater swim bait and I have been trying to get a mold made of it so that I can pour my own bait. I did some research and I believe that I have to get a two-piece mold made from the original bait. Does anyone have any ideas as to who can make the mold or if I can find instructions on how to make my own mold. I cannot find out who the original manufacturer was. I obtained the bait at the Fred Hall fishing show in Long Beach, CA. about 8-10 years ago. It was made from clear plastic with silver metal flakes and it came with colored magic markers to make custom colored swimbaits. I would appreciate any help.

Thanks,

If you have one of the baits in hand you could send it to some of the members here and they could make you either a plaster or silicone 2 or 1 piece. I had a silicone 2 piece mold made from a member here and it works great. Maybe one of them will chime in here for you. I don't want to throw anyones name out there without asking them first if they want to do it. I'm sure someone here will help you out. Good luck

A 2 piece plaster mold would not be that difficult at all. If the bait has an insert or lead weight, that "ups the anty" a bit but still does not make things impossible.

Plaster is cheap and can be something to play with. My plaster molds have held up to 1000's of pours.

I like doing molds tht are a challenge out of plaster of paris so if all fails, drop me a note. Never charge anything just like to try different baits to learn....

Jim,

I would like to send you a sample of the swimbait to see if you can make a plaster mold for it. I had ordered an aluminum 2 piece mold from ***-**** Molds and they charge me $277.94 in May and I have yet to receive the mold. Now they won't even return my calls or e-mails. So I'm resigned to the fact that I "lost" my money on this "purchase." I still want to make this swimbait since I have confidence in it for my style of salt water fishing.

Jim, I'll try getting a hold of you through your website.

Thanks,

Tunadoctor

April gave me your number again this morning and demanded I call you. I been on the phone ever since.

One side of your mold is done, the other side is not was suppose to be this sunday and shipped monday.

DelW,

I do have copies of all the e-mails that I sent and received from you. The last one was from April who sent me one on 10-02-08 stating that the "mold was going out after that weekend" (10-05).

I sent 3 e-mails since then asking about the mold.

You finally did call me today to explain what is going on. So I'll be expecting the mold next week.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my post for all your help. I really want to learn to pour my own baits. It would feel a lot more satisfying to catch a fish using something you've created yourself.

Jim, I might try to make another mold out of plaster. I have another smaller swimbait that I might want to experiment on my own.

I'll keep everyone posted.

Thanks again,

Tunadoctor
