balata9999
I am getting a do it spinnerbait mold and it says .40 or .41 wire to be used. Is that just a suggestion? I am wanting some big spinners with .35 wire but will it work in these molds or am I going to have trouble using anything but .40? Same thing with hooks - I want to use owners but it says I have to use this certain # eagle claw. Are these just suggestions or can I make it work? 1st time spinnerbait mold pourer. cadman
First of all we need you to use the correct terminology. All the wire diameter you see listed are .040, .041 and .035. The numbers you listed .35 and up would be wire all over 11/
philB
Hi I would suggest you follow the link to Reeves who recently put some Owner hooks for offer to TU members. I understand the hooks he has are OK with Do-It spinnerbait molds. http://www.tackleunderground.com/forum/classified-ads/14822-owner-red-spinner-bait-hooks-2-0-a.html Edited October 28, 2008 by philB Typo

You can use .035 wire as I use it all the time. Like Cadman mentioned usually you can go up or down one size at least with hooks. One thing to remember though is that all 3/0 spinnerbait hooks are not the same size. Mustad and Gamakatzu are the same size but owners run about 1 size larger. balata9999
Thanks for the replies. That gives me some good ideas on what I am going to do. And yeah cadman I got in a hurry and wrote my numbers in hundreths rather than thousandths but I'm not a complete idiot - I know how the decimal system works. I'm getting the do-it ultra minnow spinner jig in 5/8, 3/4, and 1 oz. I was going to try a couple of different pre-bent wire lengths in .035 wire and I would like to use the owner 5320 in 4/0 or 5/0 if anyone know if this hook is comparable to the eagleclaw 253 which is what the recommended hook is. smalljaw
I pour all my 1/2oz spinnerbaits with .035 wire, I just use a small piece of masking tape on each side of the mold, this holds the smaller wire firmly in place. Munkin is correct about the owner hooks, I like Mustad but I also use Gamakatsu and owner on occasion and if the mold calls for a 3/0 hook I use a 4/0 gammy, or mustad but a 3/0 Owner. Tony Maxwell
I have the ultra minnow mold also. I use .029 wire on the 1/8 and 1/4 oz heads and .035 wire on the larger heads. I also use oversized hooks, usually one size larger than called for. I use straight wires and form them after with round jaw needle nose pliers. I do sometimes have some flash but remove it and continue. "When in doubt, Jerk and Shout" quote from my son when he was 7 or 8 years old.
