BobP Posted November 2, 2008 Report Share Posted November 2, 2008 I think guys have been building great wooden lures for toothy critters like muskies, pike and bluefish for a hundred years. Build it from the right wood and use durable finishes and you'll be fine. A few guys here on TU build saltwater baits and there are saltwater fishing sites that concentrate on them. clamboni Posted November 2, 2008 Report Share Posted November 2, 2008 They'll last fine. A lot of guys around here build lots of wood plugs for stripers. When there's stripers around here there's usually also bluefish. The plugs do take a beating from the blues but what doesn't? most factory baits look terrible and have little paint left after a few bluefish eat them. They'll be fine as long as you don't expect them to look perfect after a few fish. The guys around here generally use yellow cedar for their plugs, don't know what's available around you. I've been debating to make a swimbait for kings but just didn't want to invest the time into it only to have one tear it to shreds... Do you think extra coats of etex will help?
