robertjp
Any recommendations on what type of paint will work on in-line blades and do they need some kind of topcoat? Or would I be better dying them? I use mostly nickel blades hammered or gold plated hammered blades. Thanks Bob P.

Celticav
I have painted some willows before using auto type paint, rough the surface a little before and top coated with flex coat, which cracked bad around the edges  , JIM
Wire bender
Bob, I just finished painting a few Dakota blades. I sanded them with course sand paper, then soaked them in vinegar to clean. After they had dried I sprayed two coats of white primer and then two coats of black and then two coats of clear lacquer, allowing a good drying period between each coat. The paint was Krylon that I had available and had I bought at Wally World. These were not hammered blades. Now, the blades look great but this is winter in Wisconsin and I have not had a chance to use them so I have no idea how they will hold up in actual uses. Sorry, not capable of adding photos. Hope this helps. Phil
snookin4
I just experiemented with dipping them with the spike-it and have noticed it chips off real easy anywhere contact is made. Also, soft plastics dissolve it. Back to the drawing board....
robertjp
I see Stamina is selling quite a few colored in line blades so there must be a way to do it. Im thinking laquer would work but I dont use laquer so I wouldnt know. Anyone ever tried laquer? BP
Rob Olling
But some of the black blades that stamina has(black nickle) are dipped in some sort of acid to deep etch the black deep into the metal.
funny farm
Have you used powder paints ?
PaBasser
I use powder paint with great results, also if I paint with regular paint I use muratic acid. I dip the blades in muratic acid for a coulpe of minutes, then rinse of with water, then white vinegar to make sure all the acid is off. Then paint the blades, then after the blades are painted I use at least two coats of clear coats over the blades. The paint stays on better than the powder painted blades. Try this I think you will be surprised at the results you get. PaBasser
PaBasser
One more thing, After etching the blades, I also use a dye. You can get this dye for your blades at a car painting business. That way when you use the dye the color is transparent on your blades. Still with a tint of color, but transparent PaBasser
robertjp
PABasser, Let me get this right. first you dip a blade in Muratic acid (where do you get this?), then rinse with water, then vinegar, then paint with power paint? then clear coat. (what kind of clear coat?) What other kinds of paint can You use? When does the dye come into it? Im somewhat confused as you can see. Thanks in advance. Bob P. Celticav
PaBasser!!! Where you been my old friend?? Drop an email or something man and don't stay gone so long!!! Good to see you around lending your vast expertise, great tip with the acid, I will be trying that this week, JIM
PaBasser
You can get muratic acid at any hardware store. Masonary and concrete contractors use it all the time. (DON`T GET IT ON YOUR SKIN) I only use the acid on the blades if I`m going to use regular paint. Powder paint I don`t ecth the blade in acid. When using powder paint use alittle paint at a time and build up the paint, or until you get what you are looking for in coloring of blades. Then I put powder painted blades in oven at 250 - 300 degrees for about an hour. (THIS HARDENS THE POWDER PAINT) You can use any kind of paint when painting blades after you etch blades in acid, then water, then white vineger. (IV`E USED MODEL PAINT,REGULAR SPRAY CAN PAINT,AUTOMOTIVE PAINTS) After painting with regular paint, I use a clear coat (2-PART CLEAR EPOXY, OR CLEAR COATING FOR MAKING FISHING RODS) When using the dyes ( I just dip blades or spray with a spray can)This is really a tint, It gives you a different look on your blades, but is transparent. (I use the dyes alot) I usually don`t clear coat the dyes. Look for dyes in automotive shops, look or ask for colored chrome tints I hope this helps.
