AlvinMack
For the weathered veterans out here let me ask this question. Do you bake your jig first without the weedguard and glue in OR do you pour your jig with the weedguard and paint/bake?
smalljaw
I've done it both ways and found that pour, paint, cure, and glue the weedguards in place is the best way to go. It sound like a lot but it's much easier and faster that trying to tinker around putting teflon or foil on the weedguard then trying to paint and then using a low temp for a long time to cure. jmccoy70
I glue mine in after paint and bake. Sometimes you gotta drill the hole out a little but that works better for me.
cadman
I paint, bake, drill if needed, glue in weedguards and top coat if needed.
rsinyard
I have always drilled out the weedguard then painted, baked and glued the weedguard in. I put the insert pin back in before dipping in the powder so that powder doesn't fill it in. To me this is the best way because the weedguard can go haywire when heat is applied to it. Old man in the boat
The one trick I would share is to drill prior to Baking. This way the paint is less likly to flake and crack. I don't know if I could do some of my more complicated paint jobs with the weedgaurd in.
Old man in the boat
And don't forget top clean out the hook eye before baking
softworm
I've got a couple of guys that have to have them molded in when poured, I hate doing it this way takes me twice as long. Much easier glueing them in for me any way. I tie a lot of hair jigs and there's no way to tie them if they are molded in, well I''ve not found a way to do it. Tony Maxwell
If you fasten the jig eye in your fly tying vice you can bend the weedguard over the eye and strap it down against the vice. I use a large flat rubber band that I cut. start wrapping the weedguard against the barrel of the vice and hold the end with a pair of hackle pliers fastened to the post. Clear as mud?? Good luck.
