JB in mold

Recommended Posts

I have a question. Ive read here in the past about using jb weld to fill and patch areas of a mold. When in direct contact with hot lead how well does it hold up? Im kicking around the idea of adding some jb to either side of a ball mold to reduce the weight and make it more aspirin shaped. Also wondering if it will seperate from the mold over time?

I pour lead from 725-900 degrees-depending on hardness and mold requirements. Carbon silicone molds can be poured @ the coolest temperature. I monitor the leads' temperature w/ a digital pyrometer. I have some modified molds i'd love to repair.

Is JB Weld going to stand those temps?

900*F was my thought also. Im guessing since the aluminum at the sprue probably takes most of the blunt high temp that the inside only really sees 650 or so. Obviously above the 500*F temp JB list but i think ill try one of the large cavaties i never use and then pour about 30 heads and see if there are any problems. To me the worst thing that could happen is it just pops out.
