Vise suggestions?

Recommended Posts

Out of curiousity -- what vise are you guys using? I am looking to purchase my first vise and would like some opinions. I currently have alot of reward points with Bass Pro so I will probably be ordering from there. Any suggestions? I do not want to buy something that I will have to replace in two years yet isn't outrageous on price.

thanks,

Wooly,

I've been tying for over 20 years. For my money my Peak Vise is the best I have had. I've owned everything from Renzetti down to the $10.00 vises. The Peak is a powerhouse and simply won't wear out. It is made in the US and will tie saltwater jigs down to size 18 in the standard jaws. This is just my opinion ofcourse but I'm very happy with it.

"outrageous on price."

What do you consider outrageous? If I had an extra $300 sitting around, I'd have a Norvise.

When I just got into tying, I went to Bass Pro shop and bought the Apex vise they had. The one I bought was around $125 at the time if I remember right. It does OK, but I wish I would have went to the clubs and checked others out first. I think I could have bought something better for the $$$. I use it for #6-5/0 saltwater hooks.

If you have a local tying club, I would go visit them and see what they use. If they are like the people I know, they would be more than happy to let you sit down and test theirs out.

Griffin Superior 3ARP Vise. Very happy with it.

I second this. I like its 360 degree rotation. For jig tying, I position the jaws to near horizontal. A perfectly horizontal position does not allow me to position some materials past the hook bend as well.

The jaws lock down great on the sizes of jig hooks that I use. Typically, #4 to 1/0. I can optionally rotate the jaws with my left-hand to levelwind jig collars. Great for tying with spherically-shaped threads.
