Buzzbait Wire Size

Recommended Posts

I've tried using .031 and .035 on buzzbaits and it does work but the bait really has an exaggerated roll and you can't slow it down much. I wouldn't think vibration is an issue with that type of bait but I tried it to see if it made much of a difference in action and strikes but to tell you the truth, the baits that have a .051 diameter wire run much better.

If I am remembering correctly my favorite baits have a .040 or .041 wire frame. I personally hated the buzzers that had heavier wire but alot of the problem was the type of blades they used and head design. I would not step up to .051 unless you were targeting huge bass in really heavy cover. Ive had probably over 30 bass in the 5-9lb range on that .041 wire buzzbait without any problems. Buzzbaits get tweaked a little when fishing and its no big deal to give them a quick bend. Usually i end up bending the blade down twards the head as they open up a little when fishing and i feel them running poorly.

Buzz baits are popular with more fish than just bass, they are scaled down to catch crappie and bluegill; and scaled up for pike and muskie. I think you need to design your lure to size fish you are targeting; I tend to use the .051 and .062 size wire for my in-line pike and muskie lures. While I guess a fish can go after any lure in the water, I think the 5/0 trebles would be a little large of pan fish; but bass will try for just about anything.
