2 Skirt questions for you gurus

Recommended Posts

1st.. How difficult is it to tie the rubber skirts with the copper wire in stead of the bands and how long does it take you to do a jig. Also is there anywhere that you can watch someone do it (tie a rubber skirt ):)on the net?

2nd.. Has anyone come up with a cure for skirt pads sticking together and having to be separated after making the skirt. We make a bunch of skirts every week and it is really annoying, not to mention time consuming. Some colors stick and do it much worse than others, with black being easily the worst and most annoying to work with.

Thanks Guys!

Chad to answer some of your questions.

Quest. #1 I hand tie all my skirts for myself with thread. It doesn't take that long with thread, but I bet wire is easier. I just personally don't like the way it looks. I do know wire works, as I have seen that here on this site.

Quest. #2 I am first getting into tab skirts, so I can't comment, and I will post my info once I get into it. I am a die hard Starflash skirt user, and that never ever happens with those skirts. The bad news is that there are not a lot of colors available, unless you buy them by the 1000's. If starflash went the route of 100's more colors, I would bet, that they would be #1 in the business. Just my :twocents: worth.

Using wire to tie skirts is fairly easy and works, I used to do it but I now only use bands because it's quicker and often times I'll only take 6 baits on the water with me but I'll have 2 dozen skirts to change colors if need be. The quickest and easiest way to tie a skirt with wire is to make the skirt with a band and slip it on the bait and then tie with the wire and then cut the band, it will cost a bit more because of the bands used up but it evens itself out in the amount of time saved. As for the sticking problem, I've only encountered it with some living image samples I got directly from GLC fishing and what I did was what I used to do with living rubber, I took a small sandwich bag and placed some skirt material into the bag along with some unscented talc and shook it up a bit, afterward i wiped the material off with a paper towel and it was ok. I hope this helps.

Chad,

The other guys have pretty much covered #1 but I will share my little bit of insight on #2

When the silicone is mixed, they have to spread it out and let it setup. It is a shot in the dark on when it is cured. The rule of thumb is around 97-98% cured. If it is not cured enough, that is what causes the stickyness. Color also has a lot to do with it. Like you said black is the worst. Watermelon is another bad color. GLC is trying many things to try and reduce this problem. 1st they tried packaging the tabs in 100 count packs. But with 1000s of tabs in a box, they still compact and stick together. They are now trying the talc route. I have to say the brown/black flake I got last week had talc in them and they were not as sticky as normal. I hope this helps. Charles is much more intelligent in this area than me.
