clemmy
It just occured to me the arguement you could make is that "Senko" has become a generic term for a stickbait, much like Xerox is for photocopies...
Mercury
My .02 on the Senko thing. Durability on the originals was always my problem. Fish one for an hour or so and they start to fall of the hook. Get bit and its for sure a gonner. Ok Magic Bob and all Stick bait lovers. Did you know that a simple O Ring can be rolled over your bait to the point that you would normaly insert the hook, Insert the hook between the O ring and the bait, You have a solid anchor to hold the bait and increase the longevity and it helps the bait last through a few more Hawg Crushings. Just a FYI, Well Chris was it just a smoke screen that Gary was fanning around?
alsworms
Senko is a Japanese word which means "to ride in front or ahead of the pack" (or something along those lines). Now I'm no genius, but I'd be willing to bet the word "senko" was around long before Gary Yamamoto. My point is they may have a copyright on a cigar style bait, but there is no way they can copyright a word. What if I tried to copy the word "grub" or "worm"?? I don't think I'd get very far. Whether I'm right or wrong, I did a lot of research on this before I sent Yamamoto my 2-page explanation. I looked at several trademark names out there. Take "Zipper" for example.........I read all 3 pages of the copyright. There is a detailed description of their design, but nowhere in the description does it say anything about the word "zipper". If they could copyright the word "zipper", then we would all have to start calling that thing on our jackets something else. Since I'm on a roll, let's take a look at one more thing.......... I call my bait an "AlSenko". Legally, I would have an easier time copyrighting that than Yamamoto would with the word "senko" because the name of my bait does not exist in any dictionary. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. Chris
woodsac
Chris, actually there are several 'meanings' to the Japanese word, Senko. The definition the bait is named after is 'flash'. I do remember reading somewhere that because the word Senko is not in the English dictionary or of the English language, that Yamamoto was able to copyright it. I'll dig around some more and see if I can find that read for you.
dtrs5kprs
Chris, Reminds me of the letter I received from Gene Larew back during the great salt witch hunts. Hang in there bro. I still have my letter. A lot of folks think it is pretty cool that a "little guy" could p**s of a major corporation that way.
alsworms
Funny how they think I could pose a threat to them. It's "tit for tat". Probably won't result into anything. Chris
dtrs5kprs
The larew thing ended up being more or less of a p*ssing contest. I wasn't technically injecting salt (sprinkling) so they could not do much. What torqued them off was a distributor of mine had put some baits in a shop at Lake Fork. These were zippers, back when they were first hot, and Larew didn't have one.
WidowMaker
Just out of curiosity i would like to view a copy of the Larew letter contents. I think it would make for some entertaining/interesting reading.
