seafoam
Was wondering if anyone here has thought about,or made eyes for there lures?Im not talking about painting them but using epoxy and other materials. I have a couple ideas running around in my head, probably not necessary becouse there are some really nice unique eyes available on the net,but would be more from a prospective of being differnt or creative.Id imagine one could make some type of form from where the eyes could be removed after curing then placed on the lure. Have any of you guys done this?
nova
I've messed around with it using silver holi tape; black marker and epoxy. Used a hole punch to make the round shape; put the dot on and then apply a drop of thinned epoxy. Works pretty good; just don't thin it down too much. www.novalures.com
ebby
you can add food coloring paste to epoxy to get alot of different colors, i have tried to make a "mold" out of clay so i can get different shapes and it kind of worked but you have to mess up the clay to get it out then wash the clay off
Palmetto boy
Im also having troubles making eyes and painting scales. Its hard to hold the scale pattern tight against the bait and paint at the same time. Any suggestions?
Vodkaman
I messed around with clear silicon and molds, black card punch for the pupils. Was not happy with the results. Welcome Palmetto Boy. Lots if info on scales, try a search. This thread should be kept to eyes. Dave
jamie
theres several options on making eyes on fishcarvers sites. These guys are serious when it comes to making eyes with realistic results
lockjaw
I've tried epoxy, hot glue, silicone and anything else that I happen to come across that might work. The biggest problem is consistency. Sometimes they turn out great and other times I just can't seem to get it right. Now I just buy them and save myself the headache and lost time. Husky
Was wondering if anyone here has thought about,or made eyes for there lures?Im not talking about painting them but using epoxy and other materials.I have a couple ideas running around in my head, probably not necessary becouse there are some really nice unique eyes available on the net,but would be more from a prospective of being differnt or creative.Id imagine one could make some type of form from where the eyes could be removed after curing then placed on the lure. Have any of you guys done this? I made a few silicone molds of "half round" I got at the craft store. I use Urethane Resin that I use to cast my lures for the eyes. They're painted with the Brides nail polish. Whenever I cast plug bodies, I take out the eye molds and use them if there is any extra resin after I cast the bodies. Waste not, want not! So far, so good. Edited January 25, 2009 by Husky
21xdc
Just get some peel and stick acrylic rhinestones and dot the pupils. They come on lots of sizes and colors. Clearcoat over them and they look amazing. http://www.joann.com/joann/search/search_results.jsp?CATID=cat1110&keywords=darice+rhinestones&_requestid=1054806

Palmetto boy
i have been using a hole punch on a peice of tape then coloring in the eye with a marker. works good. I heard that you could use a nail and dip it in paint. havent tried that yet.
mark poulson
I really like the idea of using a hole punch on some self adhesive hologram materail, and then painting on a pupil and adding a drop of epoxy. Does anyone know where to get hole punches that are larger? I'm looking for 5/16, 3/8, and 1/2 inch sizes.
nova
I just used a regular hole punch 1/4". I don't know if you can get various sizes of hole punch. Seems to me I've seen leather working tools that cut circles. They look like nail sets and they come in various diameters. The " nail thing" works very well. Just make sure it's a finish nail and use the head; get various sizes of finish nails. Also works good to apply the epoxy. Make sure he epoxy is thinned and use a larger finish nail to apply it. You have to make sure the punched out foil is held down and perfectly level to get the best results.(painters tape) Work slowly so as not to get air bubbles in the epoxy as you apply it. After you apply the epoxy do not touch or move the eyes till they dry. www.novalures.com Edited February 4, 2009 by nova
HellRAISER
I have just finished to read this thread, very interesting but to complicated, why dont you guy's try this: after finishing the body and applying the white base coat drill a hole exactly the diamter that you want the eye to have, finish the painting, and after that just come back with a wire or a nail, dipp it on withe paint(or what color you want the eye to have) a littel permanent marker (or a dot of black paint). After it is dry put a drop of epoxy and voila....you have the eye:teef: After that just clear coat the lure and you are all done I promise to come back with photos
SmokeyJ
For those of you looking for different size punches (and different shapes as well), check scrapbooking tools. They have all sorts of punches, although they can get expensive.
