Rico24
Hi guys, i do not post much here, but i have a question. I will be attempting to making spinnerbaits soon, (can't be that hard ) so here is my question. For attaching the Terminal Blade (the main one i believe) do you really need a good swivel? I have seen 2 kinds of swivels. All the spinnerbaits i have, have the more expensive swivel on them. Do i really need the expensive one? This is the more expensive swivel, "SUPER STRONG PREMIUM BALL BEARING SWIVELS" 10 for 5.99$ Or the other kind, cheaper priced one. Now i need your opinions on this. I do not intend to sell my spinnerbaits, just for personal use, and for some fishing partners. But i still want them to work properly Thank you! reeves
Rico24, No, you do not need the more expensive ball bearing swivel. Since they will be for your personal use, it should be your decision on which to use. The crane swivel will do the job, although some would argue that they don't work as well as a ball bearing swivel and will soon fail. You have spinnerbaits with the ball bearing swivels on them, get some crane swivels and compare for yourself. I don't think you would be making a bad decision by doing that. I would make sure your friends are OK with it, or you may find yourself fishing alone .
Rico24
Alright, thanks for your reply. I guess i'll go with the crane swivels, and if they don't work well, i'll just upgrade them. Thanks.
JSC
What Reeves Said. and I even use for my personal use a crane with a snap so that I can change blades real quick ... I think that the crane may be better in that it will be a little more resistance in it spinning and could send out a better sound ... I have no way of checking that .. just my idea .. My ( you know with inflation we are going to have to cahnge that to something else ??) JSC
MTfishingrods
Yeah but we are in a recession and we need all the we can get so I also agree with the above. Never thought about the more resistance though. Kind of an interesting idea. One thing I did learn this year was dont go cheap on your swivels on steel leaders attaching to your spinnerbait if your fishing toothy critters. My son almost lost his 12lb Pike due to a cheap swivel. Needless to say that one will not happen again. Dad would never have lived that one down. Ogajiga
A long time ago there were 3 choices of excellent quality American mfg. crane swivels with McMahon perhaps the best. Later, decent quality Korean crane knock offs were available in addition to American mfg. Now, McMahon is Japan mfg. and extremely expensive, & the remaining 2 American brands are made by the same mfg. There is also a confusing choice of Korean & Chinese mfg. available. However, I haven't been able to find a decent quality crane swivel in years, & had to return to distributors & mfg. both Asian & American versions. If anybody knows of a bulk source of quality smooth spinning crane swivels I'd appreciate knowing.
JSC
Hi Guys I use many thousand Crane Swivels in making custom leader rigs (Salt Water Stuff) .. Rosco American made ... hard to beat. If any have failed I have not heard about it (knock on wood and all that good stuff) I figure that if they will stand up to being used in saltwater under heavy strain that they should be great for Spinner Baits ... I have seen Ball Bearing Swivels stick .. JSC
21xdc
I will only use one brand. Worth american made swivels. The best bang for the buck for sure. The imported bb swivels are junk. Sampo is the best ... But too much money for me. Look into these worth swivels and be happy with the finished product. http://www.worthco.com/fish/pdf/allswivels.pdf
rsinyard
I think we would all agree that it is a matter of preference. I personally use the SPRO swivels and never had any problem with them. But, I will have to say I have never tried the crane swivels.
JSC
Just a note on crane swivels. This is a type of swivels not a name brand. They were used along with brass barrel swivels on spinner baits for many years before ball bearing swivels were ever used .. Brass Barrel is the last that I would use.
