jig hook questions

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know where I could find a list of jig hooks that will fit a do-it mold calling an eagle claw 570 in a 2/0 or 3/0 size. I found alot of styles that look similar, but that doesn't mean they will fit.

Specifically what I am for is a semi premium hook (from 10 to 15 for a 100) pack. I would like a light wire, something you could bend straight like the 570 does when you get stuck. However, I want something that the tip doesn't roll over so easily like the 570. I thought the mustad ultra point was going to solve this, but the ones I tried the wire is too heavy so you just snap the line instead of straightening out the hook.

Does anyone know if you could get a sample assortment of jig hooks? If I have to go trial and error, I really don't want to have to do it with 100 packs.

I was wondering if anyone has any feedback on the following hooks or knows of any I am missing?

Eagle Claw (570) - I think they are garbage

Eagle Claow 570R Red Lazer Sharp - Are they much better?

Mustad Ultra Point M32746BLN - Wire Too Heavy

Mustad M32831BLN - Says Xtra Long Will they fit?

VMC Barbarian V7150BK - Will these fit? Any one use them?

VMC V9147BZ - Will these fit? Any one use them?

Gamakatsu - Too Expensive

Owner - Too Expensive

Matzuo Sickle - Read Somewhere they'll fit. How's the quality

Thanks Ahead of Time

Next softest hook to 570 IMO would be either Matzuo Aberdeen or VMC 9147. Both nicely chemically sharpened, the Matzuo has a finely tapered needle point, the VMC a bit fuller like the Ultra Point. Sickles usually interchange with 570 but are more resistant to bend out than the above, IMO.

From looking at the catalog's and searching some other posts, I think the barbarians are going to be a similar thickness to the M32746BLN which I like but are just too heavy for the application I looking for. I still use them for other stuff.

After looking at the mustad catalog it says that the 32746 in black nickle and bronze are 1X strong while the same model in red is standard wire. I don't know if this is a typo or not or does the black nickle finish add thickness to the hook somehow or maybe its just standard wire?

I think I'm going to try the following

Matzuo Aberdeen (not sickle)

VMC 9147

Mustad 32746 in Red (Hopefully there a little thinner)

Mustad 32831BLN (Hope they fit)

According to the mfg. website, Mustad Ultra Points use a special tempering process to harden their wire, so the hook strength is more than just a function of wire size or surface finish. The 32831 is a long shank version of the 32746 and likely to be just as strong. Tho IMO the Matzuo Aberdeen & VMC 9147 2/0 & 3/0 are both inferior to Ultra Point in bend out resistance, the 570 is an especially weak hook with no peers. I would suggest that point fold is caused not only by overly thinned out taper but also by inferior wire strength.

Like to mention that only newer China mfg. 9147 is chemically sharpened, the older France mfg. version is not. And Matzuo mfg. is notoriously inconsistent, so batches will differ in quality including wire strength.

Examining 32746BLN & 32831BLN 2/0s side by side it appears they are approx the same wire gauge. The 32831 feels a hair stiffer at the bend. Both fine quality optimal bang for the buck.

By the way, these Ultra Points are my bottom line for hook strength and I would personally never use the hooks I suggested to fit your criteria.
