squigster
Hi Guys I just got Bobs swimbait mold and poured a few. Im still having a little trouble with sink holes in the tail but my garage is freezing and I guess the plastics cooling too fast. Anyways here is a pic. squigster
Thanks guys, There is so much plastic in the mold that it shrinks and I ended up with some lines but not too bad. I cant wait to fish it. The back is close to sexy shad. I used a pinch of Pearl Silver powder and about 10 drops of California blue and 1 drop of black. The bait actually looks nicer than the pic. The lighting was not good. Took one to work today and had 5 guys eyeballing it and everybody wants one. If I get a better pic I will post it with better lighting. longhorn
Good looking bait. If you're talking bout a little dimple on top right at the tail area I wouldn't worry about it. It's not an appearance or performance issue. All my swimmers have that little sink hole at the tail and I'm pouring where it's warm. Hang on tight when you fish that thing. GB GONE
On that dimple Jim....You can try to re-fill that tiny area as the plastic cools OR you can wait until it is shrinking in and put a few drops just on the end area, not worrying about overfilling. In fact, be sure to overfill just a bit but only on the very end. Then, before removing the bait, but after it cools well, take a razor blade and slice the excess off even with the mold cavity. Viola...no dimple!!! This works great but is a pain to do on all the baits. I only do it on the ones that I send to a couple of very particular customers. The rest go with a small dimple. squigster
Ok thanks guys. I thought maybe because I was starting at the tail when I poured and the rest of the cavity wasnt full. I have only got one bait near perfect when I poured and it's frustrating. Anyone thought of modifying the mold by covering the top with a lightweight aluminum plate and drilling a pour hole in it? I did this with other one piece molds I have but they didn't have an insert in them. Have you guys used anything else besides bobs inserts? GB GONE
I tried covering it and you will get the same result because the plastic is shrinking. Seemed to be worse with the covering and hole... There are other inserts available and you can even put a mojo weight in if you modify a little. I am thinking about having a lead mold made for inserts that are varying weights. That way I could mold in an 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 or whatever..... Might make enough if others are interested..... squigster
I thought about clamping the plate and drilling the hole near the nose on the plate and pouring it while the mold is on an angle to help the tail stay filled. I don't know if it would work but I may try it. The pour hole would have to be near the nose. My brothers a machinist so we may figure out something or at least give it a shot. longhorn
For what it's worth...I just looked at a factory Baby E and Tiny E and both have a tail dimple. Just FYI.
