finlander
I have a 12" trout looking bait made by huddlestondeluxe.com a few years ago. He does a wonderful job. He doesn't make anything BIGGER as of yet. His trout lures have been used successfully on muskies in Wisconsin. I want to make a northern pike looking soft lure. I have a microwave that I bought last summer. I have melted down old plastics to make some new soft tails for hard baits. How can I pour a LARGE lure at home? I know the plastic as it cools will clog a neck in the mold. Can these plastics be poured using a layering method? I know the belly will be white with green side and top. Any ideas??? Mattbell
The easiest way would be to make a 1 part mold with one flat side. That would not be as detailed. You could also make each side separately and then glue or melt (w/ a soldering iron) them together. Otherwise you would be looking at injection molding. Most of the detailed swimbaits are painted, never done it but I'm sure someone else here could help.
siebler_custom_baits
Make a 2 pice mold with the belly being larger than the top. Pour the belly then fit the top half on and pour the final layer.
finlander
I want it to be between 15 and 20" long. Alot of plastic to be melted. How do the majority melt their own? Is there a 'hot pot' for plastics, and if so. what might be the capacity of these be??
siebler_custom_baits
most melt the plastic in a microwave in a pyrex measuring cup. You can get many sizes of hot pots from several companies including lee. You can always pour our of the measuring cup.
finlander
I have a pyrex cup from last summer..maybe a 3 cup capacity. I poured some things late last summer but nothing since. This man on the west coast may produce one in a few years but at that size he would charge over $100 apiece. Ouch I'm not willing to spend THAT much. I can carve a wood fish body, or make one from clay, then make a silicon mold. Where might I find plastic in bulk that I could melt in 4 or 5 pyrex cups to keep the pouring moving right along? Thanks in advance.
siebler_custom_baits
You can buy it in raw form, a liquid, from lurecraft m-f manufacturing, and many other places. Then buy your coloring and mix up the color you need.
