Spike-A-Pike
The ice fishing in North Central Wisconsin was pretty sad for the kids and I Saturday. Nothing on the tip up, nothing jigging, and 4 misses via tip downs. My son foolishly loaned me the use of his quad runner and I had a blast on the ice. My first, my son was on the back and about 25 feet into the run, he jumped off because the minnow bucket lost its top. I got all the back to shore, about 3/4 of a mile before discovered he wasn't there... So back I went and he said to go on back and get his sister, better known on TU as fish face. She was about 100 meters behind him. As I got closer to her, I drove a little wide right and did a great 180 degree power slide coming right next to her. In the past, I had logged over 32,000 miles on motorcycles, but zero on a quad before Saturday. I just wish I could find words to describe the look on her face ; I think she thought her moments on earth could be measured on one hand. All said and done, it was a great day fishing with the kids. Just like the ones we shared 22 years ago... Only that was fishing in Spring, Summer, and Fall on open water, with biting bugs, sun burn, and me getting to fish in between baiting hooks, untangling knotted fishing line, and settling any number of different arguments. On a positive note, at least they throw fish guts at each other. I think we're all looking forward to warmer weather for our next fishing trip. MTfishingrods
Here ya go spike. This is from last weekend. Alex caught this on a Montana Fishing Rods jig and a Ghost Baits 7" curl tail worm. Hes always outfishing his dad. I was skunked for the day. Vodkaman
MT, you should make him buy his own baits and stop sharing. That should slow him down a bit. Just joking, I know you are very proud of his fish catching abilities, as we all would be. That was a good day. Bruce, has FF forgiven you yet? MTfishingrods
Alex makes most of his own baits so it wouldnt slow him down much. And theres no one I enjoy being outfished by more than him. Like Bruce says its the joy of being out there and who your there with. But you know that. yankee jigger
What lake were you on Bruce??? I went on a four day trip with some buddies 3 years ago on Little St.Germain.Had a blast. There is something about the quietness of ice fishing. Other than that,Ice fishing sucks.
Birdman
Yankee Digger, that's putting a nice spin on it. I've got buddies who can't get enough of boring holes in a perfectly good, frozen lake and sticking lines down there. Sorry, but I rather suffer cabin fever-no one ever said it had to be an endurance contest. I grew up in Minnesota and did plenty of ice fishing. I'm a warm weather pansy, all the way. Vodkaman
I only tried ice fishing once, with my brother who lives in Sweden. It was before I got involved in lure design and he knew nothing about fishing. So, dangling a strip of bacon rind in the middle of a huge lake was not destined to be fruitful. I do not like the cold, that is why I live in Indonesia. But what I do remember from my youthful fishing days, is that if the fish are biting, I will endure anything. So, respect to the keen ice fishers, it is just not for everyone. Dave
cadman
I know how it is Bruce and MT, my wife and I ice fish here in Illinois several times a year. She will go out on the coldest days with me and fish. She has a little ice shanty that she sits in with a Coleman lantern. If you close up the flaps on the shanty, with the Coleman you can get it up to a balmy 40 degrees fahrenheit, that's on a really cold day (10-15 degrees f). I myself like to sit in the open air and watch what everyone else is doing while I fish. Most of the time on a good day she will outfish me. I think women fish better than men, because they are not interested in all the gadgets, tech'l info, and the where and whys of how ice fishing should be. They are more simplistic and in her case, she just pays attention and fishes. I on the other hand am watching my graph and my underwater camera, and trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. Too bad it's not like the old days. Go out with an ice fishing rod a bucket cut some holes, fish and go home. I still however enjoy the peace and tranquility when I go out on a frozen lake, and try to outsmart the fish.
MTfishingrods
Funny you mention that about women. I feel the same about kids. My father and I have had this discussion over and over again. He said I have always outfished him and now its the same with my son. We think its because kids do things different everytime. They are more erratic while reeling. Alex will reel, reach down and grab a bite of sandwich, drop his pole, stretch yawn pick it up again, antch the bait up off the bottom, yank it free from whatever it may have been caught on and then reel again. If he wants a drink or anything mid reel or mid cast in fact he will drop it and get whatever it is. Drives me nuts. But you cant argue with the results. More often than not he either catches more fish than me, larger fish than me or catches the only fish. He will also ride around in the boat for an hour just staring at the lake before making a cast and then bam fish on. He catches far more fish with less casts than I do. I like to think he can read the water, but I just dont know. Maybe that part is just luck. If its not I wish he could teach me.
jamie
I ran across some old photos the other day of my boy when he was 4 years old on a fishing trip that we took together. At 4 he would spend all day long and practice casting in the yard and he was really accurate, more than his 14year old brother. On this trip we slid the 14 foot v hull over ther bank and I tied him on a small crank, he refuses to fish with a worm and bobber. If I remeber right he caught 21 bass that day all on a crank by himself.Thats not what made me remeber this trip it was when he stopped fishing ,sat his pole down, and gave me a hug and told me that he loved me and that I was his best friend. You want to talk about something that will make a grown man tear up. I rarely even pick up the pole anymore when we fish together because I like to watch and help him. And his older brother to this day wont fish with him because the youngest one puts one on him and then wil remind him how many he has caught vs how many the oldest one caught. There is nothing like having a fishing buddy for life. Here is a couple of photos from that trip
