The Dude
What do you guys use to tie the skirts on your jigs and spinnerbaits, is it just heavy fly tying thread? I know some use wire, what kind of wire and how do you tie using the wire? I'm starting to not like the rubber collars anymore and want to start tying the skirts on. I think the skirt will flare more if they are tied (which is what I want)--is my thinking correct? Are there other advantages other than the flare and the durability? What are some disadvantages, other than the time it takes to tie and the fact that you can't switch skirts?
Basseducer
Dude, The advantages are as you mentioned. Not being able to switch skirts also means that the shirt will not slide down the hook shank during a strike. Color placement is another plus, when you put an accent color on top, it stays on top. Since you can add your colors in layers, you can even put accent colors on each side. I use nylon upholstery thread, couple bucks for a bazillion yard spool at wally world fabric dept. The nylon doesn't rot and you can seal each knot nicely with super glue. I have not tried the wire so I can't help you there. Hope this helps. 21xdc
I have tied with 24 gauge copper craft wire for 20 years and have not found anything better. If you are new at this, I suggest 20-22 gauge wire. The key is only wrap the wire twice around the bait. Do not use the twisting method to tighten, You pull the tag ends to tighten and then twist to keep it there. I use manual safty wire twister pliers to do the job. Small vice grips will work ok. Cut off the tag ends and bend it over.
TrTriton83
I am also new to this. Could someone explain what the proper way to tie a jig is? How do you add strands? Currently I have been putting the skirt in a collar, then wrapping once on jig. I mainly only wrap the skirts I build out of living rubber because they want to slide. I would love to wrap all so I can place colors better in the skirt. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
