MidMO
Just curious if anyone puts a topcoat (either epoxy or clear nail polish) over the powder paint on a jighead. I fish a lot of rocks and the powder paint eventually comes off (on jigs I buy or make). Just looking for something to make it stay a little longer. Any suggestions? Thanks! Termite
I use Devcon 2 Ton epoxy (D2T) as recommended by Cadman. It works great. Are you hardening your powder paint after application? T.
cadman
Termite, is right I'm a die hard Devcon 2 ton 30 minute (D2T) user. It is not bullet proof naturally. If you are fishing over a lot of rocks, it will help, but rocks are brutal on jigs, and nothing I've found so far is perfect. I'm in the process of trying e-tex. Once I get some time I will give it a shot and post my own thoughts on it. But D2T definitely helps, and it gives the paint on your jigs depth, and crystall clear shine. yankee jigger
CS(Component Systems clearcoat, the water based isnt too bad either. If i airbrush jigs,i dont oven cure them,i use the CS. CS Coatings - Epoxy Top Coat Lure & Jig Paint The one on the right.
Termite
This is a jig I made using Cadman's techniques. As you can see the D2T gives a great finish and it is very hard.
flippinfool
Be sure to put your heads on a drying wheel with the 30 min devcon. I use it to cover over the eyes and thread after I'm done tying. It comes out awsome:yay: If you are using powder paint you can skip the baking process. I've never had the devcon come off. walleye4
I have never really had a problem once I cure my jigs in the oven! I fish about 90% of the time around rocks and very rarely chip a jighead.
akriverrat
the heavier the jig the more impact is going to mess with your finish. all the jigs i make at current time are 3 oz minimum so the more protection the better. i am looking at getting either a 7 and 9 oz butterfly jig mold or a 10,12, 16oz fish jig mold from collins customs next. a good tough clear coat will be mandantory.
