painting plastics...revisited

Recommended Posts

Last summer, Jerry gave us the phone of a Noel in Tampa who had a source for awesome paints. Has anyone ordered from him lately? And. earthworm77 was going to try a brand call Spike It from BPS and let us know how it worked, but I did not see a reply. Anyone have a response...??Thanks, the Finn

I also have been searching for something that I can add soft plastic color to and paint on soft baits, that will stay flexable yet not peel off. So far no luck. I know it can be done as I have seen it done by some tackle companies. I've even tried to get them to share their secret but I got agnored. LOL If anyone has the magic potion I'd like ta hear about it.

The info is in here, do a search on "soft plastic paint"

Finn, Noel is another tacklemaker like us, though sadly he dont have a PC. He aquires it from somewhere, but I never got it out of him. He was the the only supplier of the paints to Stamina Inc. a few years ago before it dropped off the catalog.

The paints brush & spray beautifully just like what you see on the store shelves, Noel threw in an applicator bottle with syringe tips for making eyes also.

I talked to him a few months ago & he said no TU members contacted him about the paint, so I'm likely the only person who can give ya a review on that :P

anyone still using the "spike it" lure dye? hows it workin for ya?

I have used the Spike-it Chart. garlic scented dye. It dyed very well and stayed on for several hours. When I got home I wanted to show my wife the worm I used but the dye was all gone. I am not sure if it is meant to be temperary or not(I was not sure if I had saved the worm that was dyed). I also have a bottle of unscented Chrt. dye and it smells just like finger nail polish remover.

Yeah the soft plastic paint I have has a strong odor similar to PVC pipe glue, but after many comparison tests with typical PVC glue, theres no comparison. the pvc glue peeled everytime. I tried to rub the soft plastic paint off the other bait & ended up rubbing the bait apart before the paint came off.

I know theres a few suppliers for this type of paint, but its obviously a well guarded trade secret.

I'm sure theres a couple guys who stumble onto this site daily who has access to it but dont share the source & they're certainly entitled to that.

We accompish alot of communication here, so its only a matter of time, we'll find it

Do you remember the price?? And what colors did he send you for that? Thanks, Bruce.

Sorry, just saw that

Ahem, its pricey, more the reason to find more suppliers.

I bought

2 oz. of clear base, (the actual paint)

1 oz. blue pigment

1 oz. red pigment

1 oz. yellow pigment

2 oz. Black pigment

1 oz. white pigment

+ ________________

$50+

He threw in some other stuff, brushes, applicator bottles, etc.

It mixes at something like 3:1 MEK so its concentrated & goes farther than it seems.

I was so ecstatic at finding it after a year of empty web searches & non-returned emails, that I had to at least try it. but at that price, you cant do any real production & stay profitable.

Just a thought on the Idea of painting softies, in Australia where I;m based its called - Hot Pour Vinyl - not plastisol. I've just sprayed 3 of my baits with - Automotive Vinyl Dye/Paint - its used for the interior of cars etc. I had some in an aerosol in the shed so I gave it a go It so far appears to have worked well, penetrates the softie. Ill give it a work out this afternoon. Yo0u would have to be able to buy this stuff in no aerosol form I'd be guessing.

The desription in the BPS website of the Spike It dye says it is permanent. I should see Noel's dye/paint within a week. Has anyone tried to paint the MOLD with colored plastisol, let it set, and then pour the main body plastic in?? Say the dark spots and a line of pink for a rainbow trout pattern, then a white for the bell and green for the rest?

I read on the 'hard bait' section, some fellow paints his plastics by first putting some enamel down, then a water-base acrylic, then 2 coats of Devcon. This can't work, can it? I mean long term.

Im pretty sure he's speaking of hard plastic lure bodies.
