gone2long
Just wondering if anybody has tried to make a mold from clay slip. Sounds like if do-able you could go to a local pottery place and have it fired, seems that would make a nice solid non-stick mold. Sorry this might belong in tools:o Chris Edited February 22, 2009 by mrbilky
criggster
I believe you would have much better success with regular clay rather than slip. I did make a prototype for a bait using regular clay and did pour a few baits with it. It was not fired, but worked OK. The problem with the mold I made was the plastic wanted to penetrate the pore spaces. I do believe that if you fired it and glazed it you would have a very durable mold. Two pieces would be trickier to make.
bojon
You could get a nice slick finish, but you would have to remember it will shrink a whole bunch on firing.Almost half, but not sure.It has been a long time since I had anything fired. Richard Prager
I would try using a high fire clay. Shrinkage should only be about 12-15%. It should work just fine for a one sided mold. I wouldn't use glaze because it is too thick. I would just seal it with either 50/50 Elmers or thinned epoxy.
