Apartment Pouring

Recommended Posts

Sure it's feasible. A lot depends of course on how you intend to heat your plastic. You can use the microwave and a pyrex cup or the stove and metal pans, which I do not recommend unless you've got a good range hood exhaust over it. I'm by no means an authority on either method as I pour with presto pots, but I would think in your situation a microwave might be the best option. There are plenty of posts here to teach you how. I don't like the stove and pan method myself but it's a matter of preference and what you've got to work with. You can use a small hot plate too but you need something that you can control the temp with. If you plan to to go with a presto pot method the same about the exhaust goes so you might want to do that on your porch because of the smoke and fumes. Just make sure you have adequate ventilation no matter which method you use. Always wear gloves and a good respitrator's not a bad idea either. One final thing, be careful what you wish for brother, cause this stuff is highly addictive, but in a good way. Welcome to the sickness and good luck with your pouring, JIM.

I would do it on the porch but some guys do it in their kitchen. I did it once and my wife was not happy and it smelled for a few days. I even go in my garage the next day after I pour and I can still smell it. If you have good ventilation in the house above your stove you may be ok. I would not use the microwave you eat from becasue the plastic leaves a residue from cooking like light grease and you dont want to poison your roomates or yourself. Some people say its safe I say they are nuts if they eat from the same microwave. Go buy a cheap one at Walmart for 40 or 50 bucks and plug it in on the porch and save yourself the aggravation. Just my 2 cents.

I would like to get involved in making my own plastics but I am a college student living in an apartment. Is this feasible? Any advice?

I do have a pretty large porch to use.

Thanks!

Very feasible! One thing I would suggest is using the search feature to see what pouring method would best suit you. I would think the microwave would work best on your porch. You might want to order some Garlic Scent. It will mask the smell of the plastic and keep your neighbors from shutting you down! They'll just think you order a lot of pizza like any other college kid. Let us know how it goes.

I've used microwaves in the bathrooms of apartments largely due to them having an exhaust fan in them. While you CAN use a pot method, that coil will heat-up a small room mighty quick!

Just lay some plastic or foil over the floor and be mindful of the water hazards (toilet) and where the electrical stuff is. Get the respirator and a few cartridges, they are well worth the money.

Beware of communal smoke detectors too. I set the alarm off in my apartment in Sweden. Apart from the embarrassment of setting every alarm off in the entire building complex, two fire engines arrived.

I had to pay $1000, the most expensive sausages in the world. I ate salads after that day.

I use the kitchen of my apartment when dipping tubes.By using a microwave and well planned exhaust system(mostly gentle filter fan placement),and a final exhaust thru the stove hood.I'm able to get by,but my advise is to use the porch, but make sure no moisture gets to your melted plastic.Always plan on a gentle breeze over you shoulder to keep from breathing the fumes.

The residue of the plastic film,is not easy to remove.Years ago I exhausted out into a carport, from my garage work shop, and ended up with a mess on my car and window screen.Ended up making a filtered fan forced exhaust system, plus going thru a bed of activated charcol for the final removal.Worked very well.Very noisy.I survived by turning off my hearing aid,but this helped with saving my lungs. No fumes in the garage,or house.

The good old days... i was stuck in an apartment for about two years. I used a micro and a nice strong box fan. I did not have a porch just a spare bed room. i can give you some tips on this one, i found it best to pour at off times of the day, urly evening things like that. If you pour inside check to see where the exaust comes out of your micro and make sure this is pointed at the fan also. If you happen to be doing any other activities in the house that the police would not approve of then DONT POUR IN AT YOUR HOUSE!!!!!

It worked for me i had no complants from any neighbors or anybody else for that mater. Just keep your pouring on a small scale, just what you need for your self. Good luck:twocents:
