Problem with Spinnerbaits

Recommended Posts

Guys I have been pouring football, chatterbaits, and flipping jigs for a while now, but cannot seem to pour the spinnerbait fully. I have a ultra minnow head do-it mold, using .040 gauge wire and Gammy 3/0 hook. The problem I have is that the lead is not filling up on the bottom...I have tried to slice a line to release air through the mold and that doesn't work. I have tried putting a piece of paper to slightly allow the mold to be open and still not pouring all the way down...Any insight guys and yes the mold is hot...

How soft is the lead you are using???? How hot is it??? Are you suing a ladle or a Lee's Pot???? Many variables, many questions, etc. etc. I have the ultra minnow jig mold that I modified for spinnerbaits. I use .029 & .035 SS Wire, lade, & tire weights. Used to have problem with 1/8 oz head. Finally dremeled out the collar area on back and cured the problem. Some people heat the hook & wire also. Good luck.

Use the softest lead you can fine, and it will pour perfectly. I know a couple of weeks ago, I was pouring the bigger Ultra-Minnow spinnerbaits and I couldn't get it to pour right. I should know better. Basseducer came to my rescue and reminded me about soft lead:worship:. I have three lee pots one of them was marked wrong.

Careful heating the inside of a mold with a torch! I did just that and when i poured the lead in it expoloded right back out and hit my face and the ceiling of the garage! No damage to me but some lead did get on my 67 pontiac tempest fender which kinda ruined my day.I suppose it could have been a whole lot worse.

I usually start with 50/50 combination of hard and soft lead. No hooks, no wire. After 2-3 test run I check how the lead goes to the cavity. I do one size at a time. If needed, I add more soft lead to the mix until the finish is perfect. Usually, the good mix is about 60% soft and 40% hard. After this I add wire and hooks to the mold (used ones for testing) and do another 2-3 runs. If the results are good, I start "production" pour.
