GB GONE
Just curious if anyone else has experienced this. I had some old baits, maybe 8 months old, in a regular freezer zip lock bag. I opened the bag up to grab a few and the baits smell like chemicals. Pungent odor and the baits are real sticky feeling. I had no worm oil or scent in the bag and the baits were stored inside in a closet. I have other bags of baits in laminate bags and they have faired better with no smell. Plastic was M-F super soft. Just curious as I think the baits are "breaking down" chemically. Any ideas or similar situations out there?? Jim
saint308
I had that happen one time, but I had worm oil in the bag. The bag was hanging on my peg board. However, the bag behind it...same color, poured and bagged at the same time did not. Never, had it happen again. Saint.
GB GONE
I am getting the feeling it has something to do with the bag they were in. There were at least 80 baits in the bag. I have noticed that M-F baits seem to get a little slimmy after time where as baits I have poured with LC or Calhoun's. Jim
nova
It's probably just the degradation of the product. As saint pointed out the one that was exposed to the uv of the sun had the smell and the one behind didn't. Nothing is forever. All things degrade over time. Some faster than others.(I see this everytime I look in the mirror;lol) When things are put together chemically it's only natural that they want to return to their origional state. Also, the bags are probably degrading as well and don't forget the scent that may be involved as well. www.novalures.com
Patrick
I had the same problems with my swimbaits getting sticky/tacky over time using MF plastic...Approx 6 - 12 months after pouring The clear color based baits seem to be the worst??? Richard Prager
My baits have been getting very tacky, whether bagged or not. I always thought that it was the scent because the scent that drips outside the bottle gets the same tackiness as well. I recently switched from M-F to Bear's Calhoun and it is not happening so far. I just went out to the garage and checked some baits (unbagged)I poured two weeks ago with the Calhoun. They seem to be just fine. They were soaking with some scent on them and they are not tacky at all. This makes me think that it was not the scent in the first place, but the plastic. I have other findings and comparisons with the two brands but I think that would be for another thread.
GB GONE
I agree Richard. I am going to send some info to Jeff and Robert as this will be of interest to them. I LOVE my M-F plastic but worry that something in the formula has changed slightly to give these undesirable results. I have also noted that baits with salt do not give these results.... Richard Prager
I would never have thought that it could be the plastic. I always thought it was what I added to it. Thanks for bringing it to our attention, Jim!
Pitbull Baits
Could it be somthing in the color that is reacting with the plastic? Maybe a softner or hardner added to it or that batch wasn't mixed right from the factory. I am not saying its not the plastic. Just wondering if it wasn't something else. longhorn
Just more info. I made a bunch of swimbaits with Calhoun's soft a couple years ago and then made a bunch with MF super soft after that. The Calhoun baits remain dry but the MF baits start to exude oil after a while. It's not a problem for me since I don't make a bunch of baits for stock and the oil doesn't hurt anything. Still would rather use MF than the others because of almost no separation. I filled a jug today with half MF super soft and half MF regular. The jugs had not been moved in over a month and there was no separation. I shook them just to be sure but there was no residue on the bottom of either jug like there is with the other brands. That's why I use MF. I'm sure this will get some argument from Del about how all plastic separates but I call 'em like I see 'em...and no harm intended Del. I still respect your expertise and input on this site. GB GONE
Ditto Gary. That is just another reason I like M-F so much. Doubt that it is caused by anything added as I use the same colorants and have for years. M-F's formulas are set up so that there is no real need to add hardener os softener. I have to guess the plastic "oil" that is exuded reacts with the plastic bag they were stored in and caused the noxious smell. Jim
pastorshane
Hey guy's I have some baits I poured for a retail store a years ago that closed and I just got them back. Some seem a little tacky, but I too thought it was the scent. They don't smell bad they still smell like the scent though. And are still fishable. Maybe the same thing as I use MF and love it too. Richard Prager
My baits get tacky whether they are bagged or just siting in the aluminum pans. Very tacky almost to the point of being gummy. This was with SS as well as regular. The smell might be the plastic bags but I don't think the tackiness is.
pastorshane
I have several baits that I have set back, some for a year and they are not tacky or sticky. But they were not bagged, the tacky ones were in laminate bags.
