speedbuggy
I am having a couple of problems with a couple of zebcos and and a ultralight Diawa closed face underspin reel. I had to resppol them (old line). Ever since that it seems like there is drag on the line when I get to the last 15-20ft of reeling it in. this is on all 3 reels I re-spooled. I am wondering if putting to much line on would cause this? Or to heavy of a line? I think I put 10lb on them. Could it be a combination of both? I made sure the line wrappings were tight when I re-spooled. My 9 year is frustrated with my repair job..... LOL
Vodkaman
Sounds like you have over filled the reel and the line is rubbing on the housing. Can you hear the rubbing? Dave
cadman
Dave is correct, back in the day when I had them, I found out the hard way. If you put too much line on the spool that holds the line, the the line pick-up spool (the spool that grabs the line) is binding on the inside where the line wraps on the line spool. Take off some line, and you will see, that it reels better and it will cast better.
speedbuggy
Oh, One otherthing I forgot to mention was that on occasion when I cast the line may go out 20-30 ft and then just stop like it hit the end of the line. It doesnt slow down first just an abupt dead stop. I don't hear any rubbing at all.

I agree that you may have overfilled the reel causing the drag. As for the cast stopping prematurely, make sure the line hasn't dug into itself. You can avoid this by keeping a little tension on the line when you spool it on. Remember that pushing the release button during a cast acts like a brake. Make sure you are not inadvertently pushing the button during a cast. Gary
Vodkaman
Gary, I was thinking the same. The overfill line has to go somewhere. It cannot sit on top as there is no room, so gets compressed, as does the loops underneath. When you cast, the innitial force rips the loops no problem. But as the force reduces, eventually the loop catches and ends the cast prematurely. This is assuming that you have no knots in the line of course. Strip some line off and all your problems should go away. I never did like closed faced reels, I like to see what is going on. Dave

Coils in line will cause this, causing it to twist while reeling in.It just makes a big mess and knots up inside. If that's the soruce of the problem then your line isn't laying on straight causing it to overlap and grab.Spincasters are known to do this. Best luck i've had was with 6# trilene XL.Anything bigger gave me problems.Like others said don't overfill, that can be one source of the problem. I started fishing with open face spinning reels @ 8yrs old and 25 years later i never looked back at those spincasters...you might want to do the same. philB
When it stops dead have you taken the cover off to see what the line is like on the spool at that point ???? Sounds like some kind of crossover or an extreme case of line bedding in.
