Ambitious first pour

Recommended Posts

I was looking to make something cool in a soft plastic bait and found this site, what a source of information! I took what I could learn from y'all and gave it a whirl, I thought you might get a kick out of the results.

A buddy of mine has been taking me on some fishing trips on his boat and last year he invited me on a halibut/salmon trip in Oregon. We are going again this year and since he likes to catch BIG FISH I thought he needed a BIG LURE. I made a wood plug and used it to pour a POP mold. the plug broke when I pulled it out so I don't have a picture of it.

I wasn't sure what to expect so I didn't want to invest in a bunch of new plastic and dye and stuff, I don't plan to get into pouring but this was fun. I went to Cabelas and found a couple bags of big shad on sale and a big cheap bag of worms on ebay so I did the remelt and hoped for the best. It ended up taking 2-1/2 cups of melted rubber to fill the mold, it worked perfect and the results were excellent (IMHO).

This sucker is 13" laid out on the box like that, tail unrolls to about 16" long.

Of course something this size would need a big head so I made a simple wood mold (single use and I knew it) that held an 8/0 hook and swivel. This was the biggest hook I could find at Cabelas or anywhere locally so it was all I could do with limited patience!

The finished jig head painted, I didn't weigh it but it's over a pound.

We will be going after some big ling cod and well, there's no prize for the SECOND biggest fish, right? This was sort of a joke but if he doesn't fish with it, I WILL! In any case, your tutorials and info here are fantastic, a first timer can make molds and pour lures with confidence thanks to you guys! Hope you like this one!Send To Phone

Man that is a great looking bait and I like all of the innovative ways that you made it and the jig head .... That design is great not only would it be great in a smaller size for a trailer but as a buzz bait for working over grass and pads ....:?

Again Great Job

I can tell you from experience there is a market out there for stuff like that for displays and advertising also. So give that some thought. I will be posting the one I am working on soon. You all will get a kick out of it. All though I have to admit I didnt have to build the mold for my plastic trailer, I was able to purchase mine. So my hats off to you rodgervich Awesome job!!!:worship:

Thanks for the compliments guys! I have close to 8 hours in this lure up to this point, not that it matters but just to keep track.

I took it over and gave it to my friend this afternoon, he got all excited about trying it on the boat! He said the color is perfect but the hook isn't big enough :oooh: so I have to search out some BIG jig hooks and cast some heads. He also requested some different colors so I guess I'll be pouring some more of these things!

He showed me some of his used jigs and those ling cod tear them up good so I'll need some backups.

Here come some questions...

I need to get some harder saltwater rubber for sure, do they make some kind of hardener or toughener that I could use on remelts? How hard can I make it and still get good wiggle action?

Recommendations on good saltwater rubber? I also need to make them pearlescent.

I guess I'll have to spend some money now...

My advice, scrap the remelt idea. Buy a gallon of salt water plastic. Should be exactly what your looking for. Close to $30.00 or so. By the colors you want. 1oz of each. cant be more than $2.00 ea color and your set. You have got to be spending that on remelts to fill that. And by time you play around with the hardener and ruining baits to get it just right. You will be money ahead to go this way. Bears Baits Calhoun Plastic Presto Pouring Pots will get you all you need to get started. Or Del-Mart Molds is another good one. Either of these two will get you started. another good one is Fishing Lure Making Products, Soft Plastics, Lead Molds, Hooks and more! - LureCraft.

[insert Compliment Here]

When are you guys going out? You will have to let us know how it goes. If the fish are biting, I am confident that you will catch on that.

As for the jighead/hook idea; you can try attaching another 8/0 to the first hook with a wire leader and using it like a trailer hook. just bury it in the back of the bait.

We're going out the first weekend in June. Two days on the Rogue River then a day and a half on the ocean.

I'm working on mold #2 now, went and made a nice plywood casting box with removable sides and painted the inside of all boards with urethane to seal it a bit. Bait plug has wood putty curing on it now, I will sand smooth tomorrow eve and start the first of several coats of paint/sealer.

I need to make the next lures opaque, will pearl powder do this or do I need a "white" color additive to do that?

i use pearlences powder with a few drops of white, it makes it opaque, but it has a depth when you look into it, you can see the sparkle from the pearlences into the bait but not all the way through, and when it moves in the light it will change or flip flop. also you can add a drop or two of black grape or a blue which will create a highlight effect, same with say a signal green.

Nice dude!! :yay:

You might want to take a trip to alaska with that bait and catch some barn door size halibut and huge lings. That thing will work for sure and the trailer hook idea just might be a good thing to try. Hell i'd like to have just as a conversation piece. Would tell people i catch bluegill with it...lol :D

This project has been moving nicely. I made a two part POP mold for a single tail grub (Grubzilla) and have been pouring quite a few of them as well. This original mold I modified to eliminate the side "flaps" and make it a little more conventionally shaped body, also thickened the tails and addes some details to them.

I ordered 5 gal of "green" (enviro friendly) plastic from LureCraft and a quart of hardener, glitters, pearl powder and a half dozen colors to play with. I can only do a few in a whole day or one/two per night so it's not a high volume operation! I sealed the molds with spray urethane and they have been working really well, they are both starting to crack though so this may end up as a one time manufacturing run. This has been really interesting and I have now gotten down the time to melt and mix, pour and cool so it's relatively smooth to make these. I've also played with multi-color pours and swirls, tricky with two big cups of burning hot rubber in my hands!

All the leftovers from each pour get chopped and remelted and mixed together for some interesting colors. The green one below is a mix of blue, red, peanut butter and emerald green and has pearl and silver and gold glitter from some of the different pours I have done.

Here's a pic of the two baits I have going.
