The Dutchman
What did you paint it with? Also, I presume it may be the culprit, was your pop mold completely dried before you painted it. I used to use Engine paint because it could withstand the 350+ heat of plastic. If the POP was not cured properly the paint would come out. Then, I began using 24 hr. epoxy with good success. I finally used Elmers and had no trouble as long as the mold is cured properly. I put it on a cookie sheet, in the oven at about 200-225 for about 4-5 hrs. Then, I know it is cured. Hope this helped. longhorn
I use Elmer's mixed with water on a mold that would be very hard or time consuming to paint. On a simple mold I paint with straight Elmer's after the mold is cured. Good Luck.
The Dutchman
Longhorn, what is the ratio of glue to water that you use. Could you give a run down as to how you do yours with glue and water. Thanks, Joe
longhorn
Make sure the mold is cured. I use the oven also. An hour or two at 325 depending on the mold thickness. Don't have an exact ratio...50/50 is a good place to start. You can use it thicker also. I mix the glue and water in a 20 oz. Gatorade bottle. I place the mold on a paper plate or tray and simply pour the glue mix on the mold and fill the cavities to overflowing. Then with my finger spread the glue over the top and sides of the mold just to seal them. I leave the mix in the cavities 4 or 5 minutes and then pour out on the plate. Then rub glue on the bottom of the mold to seal it. I pour the excess glue mix back in the bottle for reuse. When using this method it may take a few coats. Sometimes only one Depending on the mold and the mix. Hope this helps.
criggster
The only thing I've used to seal my molds is a 50/50 solution of elmers glue and water. I seal them with three coats of glue waiting about an hour between coats and at least overnight before pouring. And, I haven't had any problems so far. allenrods
That looks like my problem I only put one coat I know it was cured let it set for 4-5 weeks, is there a way to remove the paint on it now or do I need to do a new mold
Romeo D
I recently tried using fiberglass resin to coat a pop mold. I do not know how long it will last but so far seems to hold up well. Others on here have used epoxy. I would think either would coat right over the paint. I would try to remove any loose paint, maybe keep pouring scrap plastic in it to help in removing any paint left in the cavity, then coat with whatever you want. Vodkaman
Well you might as well try a paint stripper, rather than just bin the mold. The question will remain as to transfer of smells etc, but a good seal coat, like thinned epoxy should take care of that. Up to you, but it might not be worth the effort. Pitbull Baits
I would just make new one's. That is a lot of work to save a POP mold.
longhorn
I would blow out the cavities with air to get rid of the loose paint and then seal with Elmer's. Should work.
Artificial All The Way
Guys any kind of Elmers work? Wood glue or reg? Thanks
criggster
I use the all purpose white glue, but the wood glue would probably work.
longhorn
I use the white Elmer's Glue All.
