george12182
I just ordered some herbies magic dust powder paint. I am having a problem with the black glitter clear clear coat. When I painted the jigs the glitter was all uneven but it was still clear. So I tried putting in my fluid bed. Now when I coat my jigs with the clear coat it looks milky white. I used the fluid bed cup for smoke colored paint before and wiped it out and shook out the eccess but there was still a litte bit in the cup. Do you think this caused it? If not what happened? psv
George, It seems, you overheated the jig. I had the same issue with Herbie's Gold dust. I lowered temperature and it works fine since then. Hope it helps
cadman
George, PSV is corect in his statment. Herbie's paint or gitter coat will not tolerate high heat. I don't know what you use to heat your jigs, but it is essential to put all subsequesnt colors after basecoat on a lower heat temp. That is the reason I use a heat gun, I can change temp settings in a couple of seconds. Also you can burn Herbie's if left to long in the heat. Other than that how do you like their glitter coat? george12182
I really didn't get a chance to play around with it that much. The only jig I had come out clear the glitter was uneven but I'm pretty sure that was my fault as I didn't have it mixed up good. I'm going to try a lower heat tonight and let you know. If it comes out right it should look awesome. I fish alot with green pumpkin and black flake spider grubs. So I got some green pumpkin paint and the black glitter for a top coat. On a side note, do you guys use a fluid bed for the glitter coat or just right from the jar?
psv
George, I use brush.
george12182
Psv, When you use the brush are you using the glitter mixed with the clear coat or just straight glitter?
cadman
George, I use the brush method also. I have just bought some Pro-Tec glitter per request from one of my customers. I have used it in the past and wasn't impressed. I have used it recently and am still not impressed. I do not like Pro-Tec glitter, it doesn't cover evenly. I have tried and tried, and you get heavy glitter spots in one place and not enough in another. If someone can show me or tell me how to get full even coverage with Pro-Tec glitter please post it here or PM me. I would like to see pictures though, or PM me and send pics there. Maybe I'm too picky Although Herbie's is a fine glitter, and does not stand out like Pro-Tec, I like it and will continue to use it over Pro-Tec unless otherwise instructed. Just a general note nothing against Pro-Tec as their powder paint is very good. This is JMHO Edited March 30, 2009 by cadman
psv
I don't like Pro-Tec glitter either. I tried 5 or 6 colors and wasn't impressed at all. Herbie's dust is a lot better in my opinion. I don't mix it, just apply it on top of main color
reeves
I use Pro-Tec glitter mixed in Pro-Tec Clear, applied from a fluid bed. Never really have been 100% satisfied with it because all the different color glitters seem to have a different weight value which makes it very difficult to evenly fluidize the stuff to give you an even application. It is something you have to experiment with as to how much to mix in your clear to give the coverage you are after. Another thing I have noticed using this method, that the hotter your lead is the more glitter will stick to the bait, less heat and you will not get much glitter. The Pro-Tec glitter is too fine and wish it was just a tad larger - IMHO. For what it is worth, I guess I have just learned to live with it over time. MTfishingrods
Just wondering where you guys get your Herbies magic dust at? I have only found one supplier and would kind of like to check around a bit to compare prices.
psv
I bought powders and glitters from his webstore. I've never seen his powders anywhere else. HerbiesMagicDust.com, Helping Fisherman Everywhere!
cadman
Just wondering where you guys get your Herbies magic dust at? I have only found one supplier and would kind of like to check around a bit to compare prices. MT, I have been using him going on about 8 years. I saw him at a sports show here in my home town. I was impressed at the time, and have been using it ever since. He used to be in Blue Island, IL abot 40 miles south of me. As far as I know he is the originator of the name. I do not believe he makes the powder, it is commercially made for him. He used to have a phone number, which I don't see anymore. It also looks like he moved further south. The best way to contact him is through his website. I don't think there are any discounts for anyone. He was a one man family owned operation. I don't know what his status is now, or even if he is the same owner. I buy powder by the pounds, so I have not bought from him in 5 years or so. I will see if I can find more info for you. If I do I will post it here, or PM if you prefer
MTfishingrods
That would explain why I could only find it one place. Thanks guys.
george12182
Well the heat was the problem with it turning milky white. However, I still can't get an even coat. I tried the brush method, the fluid bed and just dipping it. I really don't think there's much I can do about it though. I think the head is too small to do the glitter coat. I am trying to do a 1/8 oz walleye head and when I go back to the heat gun most of the glittter wants to go into the recessed eye since the head is tapered. I tried the brush method on a 1/4 oz round head with a chartruse basecoat with better success. Another problem I think I am having is that since the green pumpkin doesn't contrast alot with the black, you need alot a glitter and have it all perfectly uniform for it to stand out. Maybe down the road I might try buying some protec glitter and the clear coat seperate and try adjusting the ratios to get a heavy glitter concentration.
