Do-It Ultra Minnow Spinner Jig?

Recommended Posts

I was trying to decide on a spinnerbait mold and wanted some input.

I had the do-it "H" spinnerbait and didn't like the way the hook road in the water, hook down below the skirt.

How does the Ultra Minnow Head run? Level?

The ultra minnow is my favorite mold for spinnerbaits, in fact I fished terminator, strike king and war eagle a lot but since I started making the ultra minnow 5 years ago it's now the only one I fish and it's not just because I make them myself. As cadman has said, its flat sides make it easy to paint muti colors that look good but it comes through weeds really well when fishing it, it also runs pretty level unlike the strike king spinnerbaits were they have an extreme hook angle because the bait runs with the head at almost a 45 degree angle. All that being said, I don't think you can go wrong with the ulta minnow.

i have a question. what kinds of hooks are you guys using with this mold. im gonna pour these when i get back from this deployment. well got couple questions. hooks all the way to 1 ounce and blades. what are the best blades for the money. not rich but dont like junk either.

Mustad #32608N (nickle). As far as blades, I get mine from Barlow's, since I don't buy by the 1000's. But there are several good companies out there, that have quality blades. Worth, Hagen's to name a couple.

I've read on many boards where Mustads get bashed left and right, then they turn around and complain about the cost's of Gamies.

Now I use ALOT of hooks from fly tying, jig, crank bait, live bait and can truthfully say I've never lost a fish to a mustad EXCEPT when I've tied a really crappy knot trying to get a new bait out to the fish.

Just for an example I have the Do-IT Tube TM mold and I use Mustad 32756 bronze jig hooks in it. I started making them at Plattsburgh AFB NY when I was stationed there and sold a lot of em to my buddies and never had a complaint.

The best advice I can give you is trade for some mustads and try them in your molds and see if it's what you want for your baits. I personally can't see paying the cost they want for them. Now if somebody gave them to me I'd try em.

Gammi's have a strong reputation for being the 'premier' hook, while Mustad has the reputation of being a 'good' hook. But this is "out of the box". Once the bait has been used a bit, the controversy is that Gammi's cannot be re-sharpened anywhere near as well as a Mustad. Somewhat of a huge waste for something that costs that much money.

If I fished around a lot of rocks, this decision on which hook to use would be a no-brainer for me. Hey, I have stuck a lot of fish with Eagle Claws over the years, and people bash them alot. It all amounts to what you want in performance from your components.

For spinnerbaits and jigs that I'm fishing in cover I prefer the Mustad over the Gamakatsu. I use the Gammies for a few guys that want them but I've noticed a few things, if you set the hook into a limb or rock the Gamakatsu is junk afterward, while the mustad ultra point holds up much better, I'm not to keen on Owner hooks for spinnerbaits either, the owner has a cutting point and tends to make a large hole in the mouth of the fish that allows the hook to just fall out, I had this happen more than once but for crankbaits and plastics, the gammies and owners are hard to beat.

I'm going to have to agree with George on this. I can put any hook I want on any of my jigs and spinnerbaits, as I pour them all from scratch. I prefer Mustad. I don't understand why guys get so hung up with Gami's considering they cost a lot more, and they don't stay as sharp. So why would I fish a Gami, when most lakes and rivers have rocks and tree stumps and everything else in the water. To me using Gami's is a waste of money. However I have guys that insist on Gami's and I put them in. I also have a lot of guys complain that gami's are too expensive. I guess it comes down to the fact of what you are comfortable fishing with. I have also fished a lot of Eagle Claw in my time, I have no problem with them, yet they just don't sell like Mustad. I can ask any customer if he would like a Mustad or an Eagle Claw, and 9 out of 10 times they pick Mustad. Maybe Mustad has better marketing. JMO
