reeves
Hello everyone. I am very much out of my element here and in search of some technical help. I make a small insert out of lead for a customer who then molds it into a soft plastic bait. He has been told that the lead will have a reaction with the plastic and cause discoloration and softening of the plastic. We coated some in a clear lacquer to protect the lead but it had an instant reaction to the plastic and melted it. My question is: What can be used to coat the lead and not have a reaction with the plastic that it will be encased in? I'm sure someone has crossed this bridge before and would sure appreciate some input on this one.
ute
George, Any clear epoxy should keep the lead from reacting with the plastic. We have just recently started using the clear Seal Coat from CSI to protect paint from plastic, and so far we have been pleased with the results. JSC
George I use powder paint ... it is resistant to the plastic solvents .... Really what you get unpainted is corrison action and not all ways but to be on the safe side powder paint ... far faster than epoxy and can vary the color ... Hope that helps JSC Edited April 8, 2009 by JSC
reeves
Thanks guys, now I have a direction to go with this thing. Since I have tons of powder paint, I will start there. Am really looking for something that will be fast for the part itself isn't worth spending a lot of time on. If anyone else has any ideas, please offer them up. rustyman
Don't hold me to this reeves, but I think some people use a foil wrap. On clear baits it could give some shine.
gunnie3035
I put lead inserts in swimbaits all the time. I have some that have been sitting in my box for 3 years with no adverse affects? The only material I had problems with was brass.
